Question:
Book recommendations, please?
2007-08-23 05:15:41 UTC
I LOVE humorous/comedy books.

I really found Dave Barry's "Dave Barry is not making this up" funny, and I LOVE CHRISTOPHER MOORE'S "Lamb: The Gospel according to Biff: Christ's childhood friend" and "A Dirty Job".

I DID NOT like Sedaris' "Me talk pretty one day". I'm telling you this because everybody seems to believe that if one likes Christopher Moore, then they must like David Sedaris too.

I would like to read more books that are funny and humorous like Christopher Moore's books.

Ooh, and any mystery books too, especially loved The Da Vinci Code and "Angels and Demons", by Dan Brown.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

And by the way, I'm thinking of buying "Good Omens" apparently a similar comedy by Nick something. Anybody read it? And if yes, how was it?

Humorous & comedy, hmmm. The only humour books I read are Terry Prachett's which is in a fantasy setting.

Good Omens is hilarious, co-written by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Very good, I definately recommend it.

And then of course there's always Shakespeare's comedies, Garfield and Hagar the Horrible comics.... ;)

Tom Holt: Expecting Someone Taller and other books.

Robert Barnard's early mysteries were humorous: The Cherry Blossom Corpse, Death By Sheer Torture.

Chris Grabenstein: Tilt-a-Whirl, Mad Mouse

Humorous but a lot more powerful than LAMB, "Gospel Enigma"... and it is a free online resource. Find it at New Free Books. 2007 Copyright, all 24 Chapters are right there, and Emailing the book is permitted as well.

i've enjoyed all the books that you've mentioned, plus i read a fair amount of "chick lit" and classical literature.....

i'm not too into the comedy books, though....

so, i can't really recommend something similar to what you're looking for, instead, i'm going to recommend a few books that i really liked:

-white oleander

-life of pi

-memoirs of a geisha

-the shopaholic series (by sophie kinsella....these are great chick lit books)

-the bourne books (if you like dan brown or david baldacci, then check these out....different from the movies, though....)

-anything by david baldacci...good stuff. i enjoyed "last man standing" , "hour game" and "the winner"

well, there's some recommendations...some on the level you were looking for an some aren't!

take care:)

EDIT:

as for comedy....jenny Mccarthy's books "belly laughs " and "baby laughs" and a RIOT!!! you dont have to be pregnant or have kids to laugh at them. my husband thought they were REALLy funny.

oh, and for some major comedy, but a bit raunchy...check out www.tuckermax.com

Anything by P.G.Wodehouse, the funniest writer of this century.

Try the Mike and Psmith series, it's f**king hilarious, and quality literature too.

Try Junior by Macaulay Culkin... It's not the typical tell-all book (in fact, he didn't exactly tell anything at all, I think. haha); more of a book with the most random and funniest thoughts of his. :p
