Question:
Why didn't Gellert Grindelwald fight back against Lord Voldemort?

If it's only because Gellert had no wand, he still knows wandless magic and can easily use the Accio spell to get his wand back (assuming it has no enchantments on it to prevent that from happening).

Even if Gellert welcomes death, it's not the same as "I want to die so kill me" because he could have easily killed himself in his prison if he wanted to die. It wouldn't make sense to wait for someone to invade the prison and then kill him if he wanted to die. He simply welcomed the idea of dying.

Gellert Grindelwald wasn't "too old". He was of the same age as Dumbledore.

You need a wand to do magic in Harry Potter. Period.

1. Gellert was weak, defeated, and old. ....true he was Dumbledore's age, but he was skin and bones and he's been locked up in a tower. I don't think he's up to take on the most powerful, dark wizard in history.

2. Voldemort is way more powerful than Grindelwald. Remember in one of the books it says "Voldemort took his crown"?

3. Grindelwald really didn't care about living anymore and was making one final sacrifice.

EDIT: Certain types of magic like Occlumency and Legilimency don't need wands. But, not even Voldemort could point his finger at someone and say "Avada Kedavra". It's not going to work. Why do you think they took Hagrid's wand and snapped it in pieces after he was expelled? So he could never use magic again. Wands are vital to a witch or wizard. Without them, they're nothing. That was even emphasized in Deathly Hallows when Voldemort took Lucius's wand.

That's really interesting.

I personally believe that the thought of dying had never crossed Gellert's mind. To me, he was completely mental after all that time in his prison and he also was feeling remorse for everything he did to people. He wasn't in the right emotional state to fight anyone, nor do I think he wanted to. I also don't think he had the will to die just yet.

But when Voldemort was torturing him, I think it crossed his mind that if death came, he wouldn't really evade it.

In conclusion, I don't think he wanted to die before Voldemort came, but if someone killed him, he wouldn't do anything to stop it.

EDIT:

You don't need a wand to magic in Harry Potter. Wands just channel better, but if you're powerful enough, you can fight without one. Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Voldemort all knew wandless magic.

...you have to have a wand to use magic... the only way you don't need a wand is if its something like gillyweed or like children can use magic by accident when they are young. So with that said, he couldn't have defended himself from Voldy even if he wanted to.
