By doing it.

There's no magic bullet. You want to read a book instead of watching TV? Then turn the TV off and go read a book.

find a movie that you REALLY like, that is based on a book. Check out the book, If it is really long try something else because even good books can get too long. Try reading that book, if you like it look for other books by that author, and try them. If you want to change authors then you need to come back here and ask for books that are similar to the book that you liked. people will answer and then you try those books and that author. By the time you get through 2 authors you will be a READER! (dont get discouraged if it is not a Classic, science fiction and fantasy or soap opera books, are good you can learn from any book that you enjoy, the most important thing is to read!!!)

My teenage boy had the same problem. He hated reading because nothing seem to interest him. One day he got a job working night shift at a gas station, and had nothing to do all night, so he asked me *gasp* "What's good to read?"

On cable TV, TBS used to show the James Bond movies, so I got him "Goldfinger" by Ian Fleming. A couple of days later, he was done! He actually asked me for more books. *sniff* More books. My boy. Excuse me a second. So I got him all of Ian Fleming's books, and some of John Gardner, too.

Anyhow, after he burned through the James Bond books, he needed more, and there used to be a TV show called "Spenser for Hire" about a wise-cracking Boston private eye, his girl Susan, and his buddy Hawk. The show was based on a series of novels by Robert B.Parker, and they are fast-paced mysteries with lots of action and laughs. He read and loved those, too.

Try these, if you want, and keep trying different stories. Like Star Wars? There are tons of stories, including novels from the movies. Star Trek is the same! Mr Monk has books, too!

Ask your librarian for books. Look in the YA (Young adult) or look for books that were made into movies that you liked, or, were made from movies you liked. A lot of times, they write novels based on screenplays, and they can be fun to read, too!

Just do it! Go to your local library and ask a librarian to help you pick one out that might interest you. That's how I started, and I'm glad I did. I realized I had a special interest in, of all things, history! I hated it in school! But after reading John Jakes, The Bastard, I realized how awesome it was and I ended up reading all seven volumes of that series! Then I moved on to others by him. Good Luck!

Why not begin with a classic like Catcher in the Rye? The book is a classic for a reason. Millions of young adults have read and loved it. The tone, message and theme speaks to the young brilliantly.
