Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a book charity, or similar, that would like to receive lots of books!
They must be in the U K and be able to collect from the Kent area.
Any suggestions would be most welcome, as I have about 100/150 books to donate. Most are fiction, some reference and some humour.

Thanks.

In my area, Oxfam has a shop dedicated to just books.

Not sure if many charities collect to be honest, but any charity shop would be thankful for a box of books.

One other thing you could try is the back of your local paper. Every week in the 'for sale and wanted' pages of our paper, there is a company that says they will take any books. Not sure if it's a charity though.

The best place for them is your local oxfam bookshop, who may collect if they have a volunteer who is willing - you'll have to check that with them.

Also worth considering are donating to schools, hospices, shelters and anywhere people would be bored and need cheering up.

If they're in fair condition you could always eBay them and donate any profits, though that can be a bit of a hassle, especially with the packing up and posting.

How about popping some of the better-loved ones on FreeCycle - it's a Yahoo group which you may have heard of which basically lets people say 'I've got a [something], anybody want it?' rather than wasting old goods.

There are some good second hand book stores in Canterbury, particularly the Albion Bookshop, if it's still there, near the Cathedral. Might be worth trying them.

I live in Barnsley South Yorks. I have donated thousands of books to my local hospice shop. They collect from my house and I find it ideal. I love it because the hospice helps local people who are desperately ill. Problem with some charities is the huge ammounts of money swallowed up by fat-cat administrators. Personally I reckon the donation of your books will do more good helping to support a local charity.

Try asking your local library - many of them would welcome donated books.
