I really enjoyed Harry Potter books and would like to find something similar. The Golden compass isn't exactly my thing. I also like star wars and star trek. I love the old time edgar rice burroughs man on mars stuff and just re-read Robinson Crusoe . Also steam punk like the movie "league of extra ordinary gentlemen" and Green Hornet, Batman, and Gambit.

Can you suggest some books I might look up, and a brief overview of what they are about in a general sense?

Thanks!

I would first of all recommend Terry Goodkinds' series The Sword of Truth, starting with the first book 'Wizard's First Rule". The series have captured my heart for years. It's about a man named Richard Cypher who goes from being a simple woods guide to becoming a leader of an entire nation. He inspires people and fights the battle of good vs evil. It is also philosophical in areas, and is an excellent series for re-reading.

Excerpt from the back of the book "Twilight has fallen upon the Three Kingdoms: a grey time that could foretell either dawn or descent into bitter night. Richard Cypher, a woodsman and warrior, is chosen to bear the powerful Sword of Truth, but his enemy, Darken Rahl, is a royal mage who commands armies, hideous beasts and - more terrible by far - a twisted magic.

This is a story of a magical world that mirrors our own, a world in which goodness and honesty are besieged by the forces of darkness and deceit. Richard Cypher's odyssey is a journey of the utmost risk and uncertain reward for the sake of love. It's a journey into the darkness of the human soul

An extraordinary adventure has begun.

The show "Legend of the Seeker' was VERY loosely based on this. And if you've seen the show....well let's just say that even if I wasn't a huge fan of the series, the books are hugely better than that c-grade tv series

Another book I really liked was War of the Flowers by Tad Williams. I read it years ago and don't quite remember what it was about...except this guy from our world somehow got transported into a magical one...but it has stayed with me that it was a wonderful read. I remember thinking after I had finished reading it, that it was like nothing I had ever read before...(and I've read alot)....I think it was just very uniquely told.

I also enjoyed The Fifth Sorceress by Robert Newcomb and The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud.

Ehm. Right now I'm Reading Maximum Ride, Its a good book series from what I've Read so far. Its pretty much not really magic but more along the lines of Experimented Children running away but They been experimented with Avians(Birds) and they have wings but they are being hunted down. And Also Eragon Series is good I'm Waiting for Third Book To come Out. The First Book was more introduction and Second hand a bit more of twists and A lot of Action you'd probably enjoy.

Eragon - Eragon had heard the story of the extinct Riders and their fall against the ruling king. He knew the only two dragons left were in the kings command. Except one... while wondering in the forest he finds a blue stone which actually turns out to be a dragon egg. He names the dragon Saphira, and develops a strong bond with her. But, as the last free Riders, they must work together with the mysterious Varden to defeat the evil king and bring back the Riders. (This is actually a cycle so there are four books, but right now only three are out. If you saw the movie, you still need to read the books, they are nothing alike, The book is a true work of art - but i like Eldest, the second book, best)

The Cry of the Icemark (also a series) - Therrin Strong in the Arm Linshield must take control of her kingdom at the young age of fifteen after her father perishes in battle. She knows the only way to win the war is with help, so she seeks alliance with the wolves, vampires, and a young wizard who she takes a liking to. Can she win the war and keep her kingdom safe?

Elephant Run (this is actual historical fiction, but it is great!) - A young boy (can't remember the name..think it is Nick) living during World War II is sent to live with his father in Burma, who trains timber elephants. But when the camp is overrun by th Japanese, Nick and his father are forced into slavery. Will the two survive?

Peak (just fiction) - A young boy named Peak journeys with his father and attempts to be the youngest person in history to reach Mt. Everest.

Maximum Ride series (James Patterson is great!!) - Five kids were gentically altered as embryos...their DNA was grafted with Avian DNA. They are born with super light bones, air sacs...and wings. They from "The School," where eveil scientist tortured and experimented on them, at a young age and are worry free for a while..unitl they grow up and the scientists come looking for them. Meanwhile, MAx (the girl leader of the group) discovers her purpose in life is to save the world. She has no idea what to do so the "flock" hit the road as vegabonds, facing plenty of dangers. (The whole series is about their problems and centered around the whole "saving the world" thing)

Well once you read Harry Potter, you know what excellent books are like

LotR is witty and creative (but a bit boring... I couldn't proceed to chapter 2 frankly but that is just me, and if people say it has to be a good book)

the inheritance trilogy is pretty good but it is sort of predictable, not really witty and it is heavily copied from other works

WARNING: Don't read twilight even if crazy teen girls come and tell you how addicting it is because it is heavily clichéd, has no plot and two dimensional characters. it is written poorly too . basically purple prose and wrong grammar.

there is the Narnia series, Jo's favourite and I liked it next to Harry Potter

The Mortal Instrument Series is Very Good--City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass.

"thousand years ago, the Angel Raziel mixed his blood with the blood of men and created the race of the Nephilim. Human-angel hybrids, they walk among us, unseen but ever-present, our invisible protectors.

They call themselves Shadowhunters.

The Shadowhunters obey the laws set down in the Gray Book, given to them by the angel: their mandate is to protect our world from the interdimensional parasites they call demons, who travel from world to world, razing and destroying everything in their path. Theirs is also the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries.

In their duties they are aided by the mysterious Silent Brothers. Their lips and eyes sewn shut, the Silent Brothers rule over the City of Bones, the necropolis below the streets of Manhattan that holds the dead bodies of slain Shadowhunters. The Silent Brothers keep the archival records of ever Shadowhunter ever born. They also watch over the Mortal Instruments, the three divine objects the Angel Raziel gave to his children. One is a sword. One is a mirror. And the last is a cup.

For a thousand years, the Nephilim have protected the Mortal Instruments. But that was before the Uprising, the civil war that almost tore the Shadowhunters' secret world apart. Though Valentine, the Shadowhunter who started the war, is long dead, the wounds it left behind have never healed.

Fifteen years have passed since the Uprising. It's August in New York; the streets blistering with heat. Rumors run rampant through Downworld that Valentine is back, at the head of an army of Forsaken warriors.

And the Mortal Cup has gone missing..."

There is really no way to describe these books. ^That is the opening story that I found on the website. In each of the three books one of the three mortal instrements is stolen, and they go deeper and deeper uncovering this whole story in attempts to find them. Once you start the first book, you wont be able to put it down. It's one of my favorite series.

I would suggest the Magyk series, which is about a seventh son of a seventh son, chock full of -- as the title implies -- magic.

The Chronicles of Narnia series, about a magical world inside a wardrobe called Narnia, and all of its inhabitants.

The Inheritance Trilogy, about a boy named Eragon who finds a dragon egg, and tries to defeat the evil King Galbatorix who rules Eragon's home. Note: I would only read the first in the Inheritance Trilogy ("Eragon"), because I consider the rest to be a tad boring. Only a personal preference, though, and to each his/her own. :-)

i personally am a fan of darren shan's books..

without giving too much away, ill try to summarize

Cirque du freak..(which is to be a movie coming out next year) is about a kid who's turned into a vampire..there's 12 books in the series of about 200 pages each. the spans over several years. its kind of about morals and like..honor codes..

The Demonata is a not-yet finished (will be) 10-book series about several kids and how their stories kind of intertwine..there's magic and demons and violence..all the elements of a good book :]]

both the series are really good and can keep you occupied for some time..i read each book pretty fast, but there's just so many of them!!

In Harry Potter every incident is correlated to the other happened earlier.

if you're a guy for the similar genre, go for Angels and Demons and The Da VInci Code

Well im not sure...but im a Harry Potter fan too and thought it was absolutely the best book im the world, until i read the twilight series. So i suggest you read the Twilight series. (but they are about vampires)

Also, try reading the Night World series. Its about vampires, witches, werewolves, and shape-shifters. Spellbinder ( a book from the Night World series) is about witches.
