Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me decide if I should read the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. I've seen the first movie a while ago, but I didn't really like it too much. So i was wondering, are the books much better? I'm not sure if I should read the series or not since I didn't enjoy the first movie that much. My best friend is encouraging me to, since she read it and really liked it. However, I would like some more opinions.

Thanks!

If your best friend asks you to read, you should definitely give it a try.

Even if tris is not the best female protagonist out there. You should read the trilogy for Four, for dauntless, for some admirable qualities of tris, for the romance of fourtris, just so you could boast when watching the other two movies that you have already read the books. Again for Four.

Happy Reading.

Well yes, since you're asking. I don't know why you're making such a fuss about it--pick up the book, if you don't like it, don't finish. You can borrow it from library or read the sample of the Kindle version. I myself like the Divergent series a lot, I even like it better than Hunger Games (I usually have the minority opinion). I loved the setting with the city and the different factions and I liked the male hero Tobias/Four whereas I absolutely hate Peeta in Hunger Games, so I'd always recommend Divergent. (Don't take any notice of the first answer, they're being unnecessarily dramatic, there are worse series than Divergent and worse heroines.)

Each sentence is about five words long. Having said that, I flew through the first book. The author is great at keeping a plot moving, but awful at developing characters and keeping a logical flow. Characters would only do things so she could further the plot without effort. Plus, the reasons Tris chooses Dauntless (and chooses to shorten her name, and ends up with Four, etc.) aren't well-explained, and the tests they take beforehand are also completely illogical. I didn't like the second book and couldn't get into the third. I've never loved and hated a book so much as I did the first one though. It's very odd.

I read the first book. It was horrible. One of the worst, most frustrating, most infuriating books I've ever read. None of the characters had any redeeming qualities. Tris was infuriating, narcissistic, idiotic, boring, and I kept hoping she'd die and be replaced with a character who at least had a decent personality.

In some ways the movie was actually better. The characters in the book were so reprehensible that they were made somewhat nicer and less evil and obnoxious for the movie. But really, the first book is truly godawful. I can't imagine that the series improved after that.
