in book 3, it said that they thought serius black was the secret keeper for the fidelius charm for lily and james and that he betrayed them and thus they were killed. later we find out that it was pettigrew who betrayed them. later in book 5, the HQ was also under fidelius charm and dumbledore was the secret keeper. and in book 7, snape mentioned that he cannot reveal the location of the HQ since he is not the secret keeper.

so my question is if black was the secret keeper, then how pettigrew was able to tell the info to voldemort, and if pettigrew was the secret keeper, then y did james let him be the secret keeper? dumbledore offered to be secret keeper, and he certainly would choose his best friend/harry' godfather over pettigrew

Sirius Black thought he was to obvious a choice to be secret keeper so he convinced James Potter to use Peter Pettigrew as the secret keeper instead. So Peter was able to and did betray the Potter's by telling Voldemort where they were hiding. Everyone did believe the ruse and that's why Sirius Black spent 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit.

Do you know for sure that Dumbledore offered to be secret keeper? I don't recall that part but even if he did James trusted his friends more than anyone else and Dumbledore was the one to come to them about the prophecy... this being the case they may not want to have put all their eggs and secrets in one basket.

My question is WHO cast the fidelius at Godric's Hollow... none of the books say for sure but the caster would obviously know the truth.

Sirius Black swapped himself for Pettigrew at the last minute. He said that Voldemort would expect him to be the secret keeper and come after him. So he suggested that Pettigrew be made secret keeper at the last minute becasue Voldemort would't suspect that and thus will leave Pettigrew alone

Sirius told Lily and James to make Pettigrew their Secret Keeper, for some odd reason that I can't seem to remember. It was a mistake, however, on Lily and James' part to take his advice because Peter ended up working for Voldy and betraying them.

Stupid, right?

pettigrew was able to tell because at the time, sirius told pettigrew to be the secret keeper, thus being able to tell voldy. i don't know why james let him be secret keeper. i don't think he was aware of the change.
