Touching the void is an incredible book, which I highly recommend. I have never really tried climbing, but thoroughly enjoyed all of Joe Simpson's books. There is also a film called Touching the void that is true to the book and well made.

Without giving anything away his climbing partner (Simon Yates) was shunned by the World after this event. He has also written a couple of great books and made a come back.

Joe Simpson also wrote The Beckoning Silence another great read. Both climbers are great orators and often give lectures on their adventures.

Enjoy!

Even as an 'armchair mountaineer' or non climber you will get a lot out of it. The whole idea of leaving someone for dead, a close friend really catches you. Then the story of strength and determination gives you a whole new look at human life. If you read it and like it then read 'Left for dead' by Dr Beck Wethers. He was the guy who was left for dead on Everest in the Everest disaster of May 1996 and then despite terrific frost bite and hallucinations walked into camp almost a day later. (Not spoilt the story, it's what he is famous for).

yup, great read, there is also a film and a documentary on it too. I used to do ice climbs, but even if you are not into that it is still very interesting, and it takes you into the lives of the people it happened to, read it and you'll know what I mean

Well it's a matter of taste! I read it and found it very boring but I am not adventurous! I couldn't understand the urge to climb (or why they seemed so ill prepared). If you understand that risk taking, adrenalin fuelled mentality you might like it. If like me you watch horror films and switch off when someone is stupid enough to ''go outside and see what the noise is ...'' you might find it a bit unnecessary!!
