The poor mans copyright is legit or you can send off for a copyright which is 35 dollars and as far as publishing yourself You could do it off your computer and still get a fairly professional look

Have you ever heard of a poor man's copyright? You send your work to youself. When you get it back in the mail, don't open the envelope. That way, it will be in a sealed, date-stamped envelope.

I don't know if this is just an urban legend or something .. but if it does work, it only costs a stamp.

check that site out. It's geared towards sci -fi and fantasy, but has info and advice that applies to all genres. I've never published a book, so I cant tell you from experience
