Question:
Any books you want to recommend for me?
2009-10-21 10:48:39 UTC
I'm 16, and a girl, there's your starter.
Please don't recommend anything about vampires or werewolves, I'm really sick of them.
I really enjoyed these books:
The Host - Stephanie Meyer
The Boleyn Inheritance - Philippa Gregory
The Odyssey - Homer
No greater love - Danielle Steel

I won't name any others because of the books I've read recently, which are few I admit, these are the only ones I've liked. I went through a non-reading period so any other favourites I mention will be from when I was about 11 years old...

I don't like pure romance, and I'm extremely picky about fantasy. Action I find dull and horror I only like in films. Picky, eh?
I like history books but I'm only really interested in the Tudors and ancient Greece and Rome to be honest....

Ok, anything you think I'd like? i've got a £20 Waterstones voucher and I want something that I can obsess about a little...

If you really like Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, then here are some suggestions:

The works of Mary Renault. Her historical novels about Greece during the Classical period are some of the best ever written, and he interpretations of that world make a lot of sense.

The Last of the Wine (1956) — set in Athens during the Peloponnesian War; the narrator is a student of Socrates.

The King Must Die (1958) — the mythical Theseus up to his father's death.

The Bull from the Sea (1962) — the remainder of Theseus' life.

The Mask of Apollo (1966) — an actor at the time of Plato and Dionysius the Younger (brief appearance by Alexander near the end of the book).

Fire from Heaven (1969) — Alexander the Great from the age of four up to his father's death.

The Persian Boy (1972) — from Bagoas's perspective; Alexander the Great after the conquest of Persia.

The Praise Singer (1978) — the poet Simonides of Ceos.

Funeral Games (1981) — Alexander's successors.

I would also recommend the works of Steven Saylor, who writes mystery novels set in Ancient Rome. His grasp of the period is good and his characters are excellent.

Author Lindsey Davis also writes mysteries set in Ancient Rome. Her character, Didius Falco, is a defense attorney who gets too personally involved with his clients.

A personal favorite of mine is Pompeii, by Robert Harris. The premise is that three days before the eruption, Rome dispatches a hydrological engineer to Pompeii to investigate why the aquaduct has broken. Harris' character, Marcus Attilius, is an engaging, inquisitive man who uncovers a financial scandal. A very good book.

I love...

Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

The Stranger by Albert Camus

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

My favourite authors are Kurt Vonnegut and Charles Bukowski, lately I've read a lot of Martin Amis and Ralph Waldo Emerson...who is actually a poet. Meh. He's still awesome :] If you like Homer, what about reading Virgil? Or Ovid?

A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Uninvited by Amanda Marrone

These ones came to mind thinking of The Host. I think they have the same sort of feel but I class them as fantasy mostly.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins?

Have you read Phillippa Gregory's other novels? Like...The Virgin's Lover, The Queen's Fool, The Other Boleyn Girl, Alice Hartley's Happiness...)

Alison Weir is a similar author (The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Innocent Traiter, The Lady Elizabeth...) which you may like.

Danielle Steel has a lot of books...

Sorry if I didn't help.

A murder is announced

by: Agatha Christie

Death on the Nile

Agatha Christie

This is a romantic mystery without the sweaty, passionate details. A man and a woman marry, but their honeymoon is spoiled by the man's insecure female friend stalking them. The annoyed, married woman hires a detective to squelch the stalker's plans. The detective's cordial (almost fatherly) personality towards the married woman adds a nice touch to the plot.

Both novels had endings that left me saying, "Whoa! I didn't see that coming!"
