Actually what is a vignette (definition) and is it different from a chapter????
Actually I have a summer assignment (YEAH it sucks to have one during the summer) for my honors english class; I have to read the house on Mango Street and write a whole notebook of journal entries for it as I read. Well thanks! =D

Vignette: a short descriptive literary sketch

OR : a brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie)

Reading 'The House on Mango Street' was an assignment I had towards the end of my Junior year in high school. It was a little different, but not in a bad way. An easy and VERY quick read. We had these things called "copy changes", where you were to write a story very similar to an experience that Esperanza (protagonist) went through, but that actually happened to us. Maybe this is similar to what you are doing, but I'm not sure.

Chapter: : a main division of a book b: something resembling a chapter in being a significant specified unit

A chapter is more like the definition says, "'a "division" of a book, novel, novella, etc.'" A vignette is more of a picture or quick sketch of a scene with somewhat very, few words. A vignette leaves room for the audience and reader to think and interpret the novel their own way. For you to fill in the blanks, like Mad Libs.

Vignettes are somewhat easier to read as you can focus on what is going on in just that small amount of literature. Chapters can sometimes be really lengthy, and just add too much detail and take away from the main idea, or "title" (most of the time).

Hope this helps you!

P.S. -- Bobinbog (whatever his/her name) you just googled the word and pasted the first available definition, which in this case doesn't work, because you are all over the place with your answer.

A chapter is a smaller arc within a story that helps to move the plot forward. Like, if a character is traveling, the first chapter might be scenes where they're packing and getting ready to leave and then saying goodbye; the second might be scenes where they're in the airport and on the plane; the third chapter would be scenes where they're arriving at their destination and settling in, and so on.

A vignette is a small "slice of life" type scene that isn't connected to an overall story. It's self-contained.

A vignette is a decorative design or small illustration used on the title page of a book or at the beginning or end of a chapter.
