Different law enforcement agencies use different codes. Commonly though, policemen and women use the "ten code" Basically, they can relay information using numbers: 10-22 (disregard) and 10-50 (accident) and so on.

If an officer needed backup he would likely just ask for it. He'd give his number (say he was officer 624) and request backup. He'd give his location (his 20--short for the code 10-20).

"624 requesting backup"

"What's your 20?"

He'd give his location and that would be about it. The dispatcher would tell him if someone is coming and how soon they would be there.

Not all officers go strictly by the ten code, it is just easier to relay things and quicker because it's universal and easy to say.

Hope that helps.
