Both. Yeah, he did drink a LOT, and he worked it into his show, too.

There were a thousand articles written on this subject when Dean was alive. Much conjecture as to Dean's sobriety. I tend to believe what Dean's closest friends and those he worked with had to say about it - that Dean did like his booze, but that he was sober when he was working. The alcohol during his live acts and tv show were part of his persona, a trait that people loved about him and an image he enhanced whenever possible while actually limiting it onstage without the audience's knowledge.

From what I understand it was more of the image of drinking that was his trademark. Although he made out to be a heavy drinker on stage, he mostly used apple juice, but off stage was a Jack Daniels man.

Although his image was of a party goer, Martin did not party all night with the rest of the "Rat Pack" crew - actually calling themselves "The Clan". He usually went to bed early so he could play golf the next morning. He was obsessed with golf, and once stated in an interview that he would have preferred to be a professional golfer than an entertainer.

Surest proof is that he was consistently drunk every night on stage, yet never failed to hit his marks and do his part of the show.

Now if he'd just been an alcoholic with a work ethic, invariably his show would have showed a greater variation. It is harder to be a drunk, pretending to be drunk, than it is just to pretend to be drunk.

No, he was really a heavy drinker. Made his mark that way....

It was an act for a long time. After his son died, he became a stone alcoholic and it was very sad and ironic.
