Question:
Writers, what do you write in?

I, too, am a writer, and have always found myself fascinated by the numerous ways in which the craft of writing can be performed. Do you use simply a sheet of lined paper? A traditional composition notebook? Or do you find yourself drawn to the elegance of journals? I know that many are using computers these days for writing, and indeed, they are beneficial, but I find that they are largely impersonal.

I have also found that, in some instances, it is difficult to write in certain journals. I have no idea why this is, but oftentimes, when writing in one that is more elaborate, the ideas do not flow in the way that I would like. These journals are plentiful in my case, it's true, and I regret buying so many beautiful journals that I feel hesitant in writing in! It's a shame, really, that many of the journals in which we envision our writing do not always allow us to express our thoughts freely, effortlessly.

For example, my current journal is an Italian leather, and though it is lovely, I frequently succumb to writer's block while using it. ): However, in contrast, when I put to use an ordinary composition notebook or something less ornate, I, for the most part, am able to write without problems (though this is not always the case). All the same, I always find myself coming back to the nicer varieties, because -- I admit it -- there is something immensely satisfying about writing in something beautiful. I don't know how to describe the difference in writing that specific notebooks may or may not provoke; what does everyone think? Have you noticed differences in your writing when writing in a certain notebook? Do you feel more restrained when writing in something nicer?

Eh. I have too many notebooks and journals to count, and I do not write consistently in any of them. Rather, I switch from notebook to notebook spontaneously, and hope for the best. xD I really don't know which suits me best; I suppose it depends on the time and my mood.

Oh, yes, and also, do you have a preferred location in which you write? I enjoy any place that has plenty of natural sunlight; I find that, in my experience, confined spaces encourage writer's block. Writing outdoors is very lovely. :D

And, of course, a trusty pen -- any color ink will do. But no pencils. Eek. I am quite persnickety.

And you? (: Please share your thoughts!

I write using whatever is around me. At home, I either use my typewriter or type on the computer. If I'm hanging out in my room, then I just write little drabbles on my homework or in one of my numerous journals I've collected that are regular simple notebooks as well as little journals I've gotten from Barnes & Noble.

If I'm out or at school, I just write on a spare piece of paper or my page of notes. Sometimes I just go to the notes app of my iPod touch and use that.

Honestly, I've noticed that there is a great different between my writing depending on what I'm writing on. For example, with just a pencil and paper, I tend to forget details and skip words, because my mind is going too fast for my hand to follow.

I usually write using a pencil or a fine point pen (in school). Although I much prefer to use my fountain pen with purple ink while at home. I do the same as you, switching from notebook to notebook, usually using which ever one I can get my hands on first.

Wherever an idea hits me is the place I write. Unfortunately, ideas tend to hit me as I'm trying to fall asleep so I tend to scribble ideas down in bed and then continue the ideas while lounging around the next down in my living room. There's this pond near my house which I love to write at. I love sneaking out of my house around dawn and just being inspired to write by the colors of the sunrise. I also tend to write more at night.

Well I do write in a computer.

My reason for this is because I find it much faster to type a story rather than just writing it (which slows me down if I write too much it cramps my hands).

I know exactly how you feel. I too have plenty of notebooks and journals very nice I might add. Many of them are blank waiting to be written in.

But for some reason I can't write in them.

I think we don't write in them because they have such beauty and I feel as though I don't want to ruin it in the inside.

It is satisfying to write in a beautiful journal because a beautiful journal might be matched with a beautiful well-written story.

Depending on my mood I choose not to write in notebook or journal. Its more my fault as I don't like it when the neatness shifts. One day your writing perfectly and the next your writing in a different style.

Hmm.

I write on my computer on Microsoft Office, It has spell checker and a very fast and trusty thesaurus!

I too cannot write in the beutiful journals I buy for $10- $20 dollars!

Composition note books help too and a pocket thesaurus, I usually write in my room {Which does not work} or out side which I love but were I live the weather switches to hot and cold in hours.

I like typing it up, or using gel pens because writers do NOT erase their mistakes in a draft format, so a pencil will not work for me!

Haha. I love sharing opinions xD

For some reason I can't write on paper. But I suppose that's because I started "really writing" on MS Word, so I might have gotten used to it. I understand what you mean about journals though. I've bought a few journals for writing myself, but only one of them has anything written inside. It's only has a few pages written in though, haha. I can't help it - I feel more comfortable typing my stories most of the time. Writing by hand is too slow and messy for me (or, at least with my handwriting, haha).

uh, well i write in or on anything i can get my hands on. i tend to travel with something i can call a journal, but i don't expect it to be of any particular type. i tend to get "journals" as gifts and sometimes i use them and sometimes i don't. once i was in jail and the ******* guards wouldn't give me anymore paper. i ended up covering the walls of my cell in writing...i had to use pencil since i was not allowed to have a pen.

i don't have any particular place i prefer to write. i don't like being in the direct sun to read or write. for me, it's an internal state of being that counts most. the words simply come and either i'm ready to write or not. i get irritated if i'm not ready with the required instruments - paper and pen, computer, chalk and a sidewalk :)

i am semi-obsessed with fountain pens. i don't know why, but that's one thing i prefer to always have even if i'm not writing.
