Question:
In Harry Potter and the half blood prince...?

Harry is talking to Lupin about whether his dad could be the half blood prince. But he checks the date on the book, and it is over 50 years old. Lupin says that is way before Harry's dad and Snape were at school. So how could Snape be the half blood prince? I don't get it.

The book was likely a hand-me-down from his mother or purchased used (like most of the Weasleys' books are). Just because the book was published 50 years ago doesn't mean that it hasn't been used more recently.

It's perfectly normal for the same book to be in use for several years. In fact, this is obviously the case at Hogwarts, as that same 50 year old book is still being used in the current Potions curriculum when Harry has to take the class... otherwise he'd have never come into possession of it.

I find it more odd that Harry didn't recognize the handwriting in the book.

i.. uh... wasn't the book a school spare book reused by a lot of people over the years? so the book was old but Snape used it later and wrote notes in it. so the date on the book wasn't really the clue they thought it was.

on the other hand, Hagrid was expelled 50 years before Chamber of Secrets and went to school with a slightly older Voldemort but i thought Harry's dad and Snape went to school with Hagrid too but they were probably only 20 or so, i guess, when they died 12 years before. i'm not sure about that though, maybe they were just friends with Hagrid like Harry is...

Snape is as old as James Lupin etc..

From what I gather, Snape was always greasy and in poorly fitting clothes. I assume he was poor.. and maybe the book was something he too grabbed out of the closet as a loaner.. and returned it there at the end of the year with all his notes in it...?

Snape originally got the book second hand. He came from a poor family.

James Potter's family was rich. He would get all new books, so it wouldn't make since for him to own such an old textbook. Snape's family was poor, and so re-using old books or simply buying used books was much more expected.

It's generally believed that the book belonged to Snape's mother first. =D

Snape came from a family who was poor.

And he got a hand-me-down book at Hogwarts simple as that.

But, interesting question....

Because that book wasn`t originally Snape`s , it was his mother`s & his mother was at Hogwarts 50 years ago .

Well its Snape for sure, but then its also partially his mother aswell. Snape's mom's maiden name was "Prince" and his dad was a muggle, so he's basically "half blood", and he decided to call himself "half blood prince".

:( i in my view understand you. :) I cried too as quickly as I first examine books 6 and seven, and that i nonetheless cry as quickly as I reread them. So, to respond to your questions: a million. it quite is a hard question. quite. I belive Hermione is my regular character, by way of fact , she is extremely clever, merely, an rather solid pal for Ron and Harry, she continually enables them, whether she disagrees and because i think of that's extremely complicated to be the only woman between 2 boys . :D 2. Bellatrix is my least regular character by way of fact she murdered her very own brother! I advise, it quite is revolting! ...and he or she laughed after that.... 3. Frankly, I omit genuinely everyone that died...specifically Fred Weasley , Tonks and Lupin , Hedwig ( she did no longer need to die), Sirius, Dumbledore needless to say, even Snape, by way of fact interior the top he tutor that he replaced into solid, Colin Creevey, by way of fact he replaced into so youthful, and the the remainder of alternative 50 persons who died interior the conflict of Hogwarts. R.I.P. all :( As a private oppinion, i think of that J.ok. Rowling replaced right into somewhat cruel with the final books ( 5,6,7) ...
