Question:
What are some books you would label as "must reads"?

I've been getting more and more into reading and am running low on books left on my own shelf, what are some you would suggest to read? Classics are ok, but I'm leaning more toward modern English books, preferrably fiction (but if you consider it a must read and it's nonfiction that's ok too!)

Thanks!

MAXIMUM RIDE!!! I'm serious! You, and anybody who reads this, will LOVE that series!!! It's by James Patterson.

Here's a summary from Wikipedia:

The plot follows the adventures of Maximum Ride (more commonly known as Max), a headstrong fourteen year-old, and her group of human-avian hybrids, Fang, Iggy (who is blind due to an experiment at the school), Nudge, Gazzy (Gasman), and Angel. They make up the Flock, who have been the subjects of experiments[5] leaving them 98% human and 2% avian.[6] The experiments were conducted at a facility known as "The School", located in Death Valley, California. Other Schools create more hybrids, but the one the flock was made in happened to be in Death Valley. The flock is being hunted down by "Erasers"(human-lupine (wolf) hybrids), and later "Flyboys"(Robot Erasers), that were also created at the School. The Flock works towards protecting the world from domination by mysterious figures, who have also shown an interest in their capture. As well as attempting to take over the entire world. However, the most recent republishing of the books have featured two different series names: The Fugitives and The Protectors. That explains why the fourth and fifth books had a different plot then the first three.

This is DEFINATLY a must read.

Skellig- a heart wrenching story that will forever leave you changed. Quote: Why do we have shoulder blades?- Michael

Some people say that that's where our wings used to be.- Teacher

Artemis Fowl- A funny, witty, and suspenseful book showing that fate is sometimes real and magic exists. ( I swear it's totally better than how I make it sound! There are six books in the series)

The True Adventures of Charlotte Doyle- Not many thirteen year old girls are accused of murder and found guilty.

There are so many more! And remember, even though a book looks bland from the outside doesn't mean that it isn't bland in the way it's written!

I like to read a wide variety of books from classics to popular fiction from the best sellers lists to those that have won literary awards.

I'll even read a good children's book if its an award winner. After all, a good story is a good story.

My must read list is a 100+ long, however, I'm currently recommending:

The Road by Cormac McCarthy*** (newer)

The Eight by Katherine Neville

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Check out books that are on these lists:

-The Alchemist - Paulo Coelco

-All of Jane Austen's works. Especially Sense and Sensibility. I know they are classics, but they will always be my favorites.

-Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte - again another classic, but just as good as Austen's

-The Screwtape Letters - C.S. Lewis

-Girl With a Pearl Earring, Falling Angels - Tracy Chevalier

-The Goose Girl and Enna Burning - Shannon Hale - more "young adult," but it's a good princess/fantasy book for those a little older. I couln't put it down!

-Uglies, pretties, Specials, Extras - Scott Westerfield

-Gospel According to Larry - Janet Tashjian - Makes you really think about your life and your possessions.

hope that helped. They were all buys for me.. that means really good :)

And I'm nineteen, if that gives you any indicator of the books I chose. Not too juvenile, but not impossible to understand either.

*edit

oh and p.s. Just a warning: unless, you like extreme profanity and disturbing writing, don't read Chuck palahniuk's stuff. Especially Choke..

For fiction I love anything by crime/thriller writer Michael Cordy.

Anchee Min's 'Empress Orchid' is great - its a book about the last empress of China in narrative form. (semi fiction?)

Non-fiction that I would recommend is the 'Princess' series by Jean Sasson - the story is a true story of life inside Saudi Arabia's royal family.

Right now I'm reading Danny Wallace's 'Friends Like These' - he's a comedic writer who wrote 'Yes Man'. Its definitely a feel-good novel.

Of course its hard to recommend stuff without knowing what you like to read! :)

the Maximum ride series is a must read. "Maximum Ride is a fourteen-year-old girl with wings who is the result of some experiments at a secret lab to inject avian genes into human embroyos. Max is the oldest of the six members of her family, or as they refer to themselves, the flock. The others are Fang - a taciturn boy who is four months younger than Max; Iggy - who was blinded by experimentation on his sight at the lab; Nudge - a young girl who talks non-stop; and two kiddies, the Gasman - an eight-year-old boy with persistent intestinal problems and Angel, his six-year-old sister. Max and her companions were kept in cages and subject to repeated scientific experiments during their life at the School (as the lab was called); they were eventually freed by one of the lab scientists (who are referred to by the flock as Whitecoats) named Jeb Batchelder. Jeb secreted them at his mountain home and raised and educated them; but Jeb suddenly disappeared two years ago and the flock has been on its own since then. Suddenly, Erasers (experimental beings also developed at the lab who can morph into powerful vicious wolf-like creatures) raid the family's mountain hideaway and kidnap Angel. It's up to the flock to save her.

If you haven't read Harry Potter and have no plans to...please shoot yourself. Okay don't, just go read them.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness - Awesome books, set way back when, if you like wolves, you'd like this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronicles_of_Ancient_Darkness

Darren Shan Saga - Good read, but totally Sh** ending, still worth reading. Has vampires and a snake boy ;D

Hmm, not sure what else... Series of unfortunate events? Ending annoyed me, but they're alright, depends on your taste.

Happy reading! x
