Question:
How Do I Become a Teen Freelance Writer?

become a freelance writer for magazines. I am a teen who loves to write and my mom was actually a freelance writer for about 20 years. She was really good at it and made a lot of money. I don't want to get a boring work-the-cashier job at some fast food place. I rather write for magazines. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to find good magazines to write for, how to write query letters, etc. Thanks to all who answer.

1. Google "freelance writing jobs". A list of site will come up offering different jobs, and listings of magazines who are accepting freelance work. Usually the magazines are on very singular subjects (scifi, writing, cooking, etc), so pick something you're good at and start crackin'.

2. Query letters can be tough. You want to appear creative, interested and eager without sounding pleading. You also want to hook the reader in the same way your would a story (at least, this is what I learned from my screenwriting).

I would honestly suggest asking you mother for the finer details, I'm sure she'd be glad to help and excited that her daughter shares her interests.

Good luck.

First, get a copy of the Writer's Market 2009. This book has hundreds of pages and lists magazines' exact needs. There are also freelance websites if you would like to work online.

My e-mail adress is bright-eyes-of-mine@hotmail.com

I can send you links to four sites that I've made plenty of money on, but please use the link so that they know I referred you :)

Magazines are not easy to break into, so working online might give you a boost and some credentials to begin with.

You could try this list: http://www.freelancewriting.com/guidelines/pages/index.php (claimed to list the magazines which buy from freelancers)

Online Writing Jobs is dedicated to freelance writers http://www.online-writing-jobs.com/jobs/todays-online-writing-jobs.php

You could find general info for freelance writers, advices, etc. at the Freelance Union http://www.freelancersunion.org/ . Also may find the blog http://freelanceswitch.com/ pretty interesting.

Good luck!

You can try, but 99% of the time you will fail. you don't really have a resume, unless you've have other experience writing for publishing companies. a tenth grade english level is probably insufficient, even if you attend these workshops. Take classes instead, though they cost a LOT. There is the off chance that some people are hiring young people for writing articles about youth and etc. if you're not discouraged, then you should definitely follow your goal
