Good luck with that. Most reputable publishers do not take unagented manuscripts. And if there's anything you need to know about this business, it's that there's nothing "quick" about it. Even if you do manage to find a publisher who will take an unagented, unsolicited manuscript, it could be months or a year before you hear back from them.

If you do find a publisher willing to publish your book (and "give it the chance it deserves"), and they ask you for money? Run away. Money flows TO the writer. Vanity publishers are scams, for the most part, and self-publishing won't get you "noticed" either. The only time you should be handing money over to someone is to an agent AFTER they get you a publishing contract.

Yeah, and I'd like a new Ferrari, and an Olympic gold medal and a winning lottery ticket.

You want a publisher? It won't be quick and you'll have to do your own research to find one...and you will probably need an agent whether you want one or not. The world does not owe you a favour. If you want a reputable publisher to read your manuscript, get in line.

Once it's finished, of course. Not knowing how long it is is hardly a good sign. And it isn't only a first draft you're hoping to sell...right?

Check out the 2010 edition of CHILDREN'S WRITER'S AND ILLUSTRATOR'S MARKET. It has a list of publishers for children's books, what they are looking for (such as fantasy), and whether or not they want to see your manuscript without an agent.

If you get a writer's guide it will have publishers listed. It will also have helpful hints about how to write a query letter that will grab attention. You should be able to find a copy at your local library.
