how about Ibn al-Haytham? He was an eleventh-century Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method.



Born in Basra (located in what is now Iraq) in 965, Ibn al-Haytham first studied theology, trying unsuccessfully to resolve the differences between the Shi'ah and Sunnah sects. He turned his attention to the works of the ancient Greeks, including Aristotle, Euclid, and Archimedes. He was the first person to apply algebra to geometry, founding the branch of mathematics known as analytic geometry.



He traveled to Egypt to build a dam on the Nile, failed, and ended up imprisoned in Cairo for ten years. During this time he developed the idea of systematically testing hypotheses with experiments—the core of the scientific method. He wrote more than 200 books and treatises in his lifetime.

What grade are you in? Maya Angelou's autobios are supposed to be good, if you're in high school.



Anne Frank's A Diary of a Young Girl is a classic, not sure it really qualifies as an autobiography, though..

I would agree with Helen Keller or Anne Frank. You could also do one on Helen Keller's teacher by Helen Keller herself: Teacher: Anne Sullivan Macy by Helen Keller.



I also suggest you do one on the mother of Mary Shelley (Frankenstein). A title is Mary Wollstonecraft by Janet Todd; Mary Wollstonecraft is the mother of feminism and wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Women. There are probably other biographies of her, too.



There are other women you could write about like Louisa May Alcott, whose mother was instrumental in the beginnings of the social services; Louisa May Alcott by Madeleine B. Stern.



You could do one on Clara Barton the founder of the Red Cross; for instance from Woman of Valor: Clara Barton and the Civil War by Stephen B. Oates.



You could also do one on Florence Nightingale who was instrumental in bringing about more sanitary conditions in nursing (among other things) - Heart and Soul: The Story of Florence Nightingale by Gena K. Gorrell.



Another suggestion would be to write about one of the most famous writers of all time, Jane Austen, from: A Memoir of Jane Austen by James Edward Austen-Leigh (her nephew).



Another suggestion would be to write about another great author - Charlotte Bronte (The Life of Charlotte Bronte by Elizabeth Gaskell; her fellow writer and friend).

She died too young to really "make a difference" on a large scale, but if you read it you can see the impact she had on everyone who knew her. I read that book when I was in fifth grade, and it's stayed with me nearly ten years later.
