Well first you need to figure out what genre you really like. Base it off of movies. What genre of movies is your favorite? For example, if I had never read a book before and I really liked fantasy movies then I would pick up a fantasy book in either the young adult or adult section. If you're into fantasy then I highly recommend The Lord of the Rings trilogy. A lot of people like Harry Potter too. If you like stuff like mystery/horror, then you may want to start in that section of libraries or bookstores. Just look around on Amazon.com and look up different genres. It'll come to you. Just start somewhere. =)

Take a visit to your local public library where you can ask for help with your selection from helpful, qualified staff and you can browse the shelves until you find a book that looks interesting to read - be it sience fiction or fantasy, manga or graphic novel, action, etc. - or even listen to (talking book).

Choosing the best book to read is about matching your reading level and your tastes together into something you enjoy.

Should you not have local library quite so local, try a local bookshop (or even a school library).

Here are some worthwhile books, beginning with the easiest to read; all are good, most are available in your local public library, or they can do an interlibrary loan for the rarer ones; would suggest printing or making a copy of this list, going through it from "Tintin" and "Good Masters" on, seeing if you like the books; together, they provide good education and insight:

"The Neverending Story," Michael Ende;

"Johnny Tremain," Esther Forbes;

"They Call Me Coach" and "Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success," John Wooden;

"West with the Night," Beryl Markham;

"When Invisible Children Sing," Huang, M.D.;

"For Men Only," Shaunti Feldhahn;

Science fiction and fantasy are the best genres in my opinion.

I've heard Ender's Game and the Artemis Fowl series are great (they are the favorite books of my best guy friend).

Harry Potter is also good, of course. If you read the Twilight series, girls will love you.

I think all of those are best sellers, and they will all be available in a public library.

Classics - really really really good.

- 'Catcher in the Rye' by JD Salinger

- 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee

- 'The Red Badge of Courage' by Stephen Crane

Also I just re-read the His Dark Materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman. It starts with 'The Golden Compass'. A great read for all ages.

Every Young Man's Battle. It's good I've heard, I've read the girl version of it, it's kind of like a self-help book, except not so much. Find it in the spirituality section.

there's no real answer to this, you just have to find something you like, i hated reading till i was 13-14 b/c my mom always made me read books beyond my maturity level, that were more fit for a kid in thier senior year, but one day i read harry potter out of having nothing else to do and i enjoyed it, and heve enjoyed reading since. Now i'm not telling you to read H.P. but, try and think if you want to read fiction or not fiction, and if fiction, what kind? romance, sci-fi, magic, just about normal life, etc..
