How is the mockingbird a symbol in the novel "To Kill A Mockingbird?"
Can anyone please explain that to me? I think it is a really good novel, I just don't answer that part and the title's relation to the whole novel.

If there are any symbols that you can think of please feel free to tell me too, along with a brief explaination of why.

Thanks =)

The mockingbird symbolizes innocence, and the innocent characters (mainly Boo Radley, Tom Robinson and Scout).

In the novel, Miss Maudie says that “mockingbirds don’t do one thing but... sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” In the same way, Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Scout do no harm to the world, are innocent and kind, and yet they are persecuted, whether as a result of a personal choice (Boo Radley's reclusiveness), a situation beyond control (Tom Robinson's race), or simply apprehension towards maturation (Scout).

A "mockingbird" in this book symbolizes a couple things.

First of all, it's called 'To Kill a Mockingbird' because Atticus told Jem "'Tis a sin to kill a mockingbird" because all they do is sing and don't harm anyone.

First of all, Jem is a mockingbird because at the beginning of the book, he's so innocent and naive. However, after the trial, his innocence is shattered and destroyed because he believed that Tom Robinson would win, but he didn't because he's a N e g r o. The trial made Jem more aware of how cruel the real world can be.

The second "mockingbird" is Boo Radley because he's a scapegoat of Maycomb County. In chapter one, there's a physical description of Boo Radley, saying that he's 6.5 feet tall, blood on his hands, scars, etc. Towards the end of the book, we learn that these attributes/characteristics that Boo is said to possess are incorrect. Boo turns out to be a completely different person than the Boo Maycomb County has created.

The third "mockingbird" is Tom Robinson. He was blamed for the rape and abuse of Mayella Ewell only because he's black. He's another scapegoat of Maycomb County, just because of his race.

And lastly, I would say Dolphus Raymond is another example of a "mockingbird" because he married a ***** woman and has mulatto children. He is ostracized by Maycomb County because they blame his marriage to a ***** woman on his "whisky", which is in fact Coca-Cola. He's excluded from both the white and N e g r o community, because he cannot fit into either groups.

I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask :)

I have already read this book. :) The mockingbird is a symbol. I forgot what for, but here's a quote that i'll never forget: (well, part of it) It is a sin to kill mockingbirds, because unlike crows and other birds, mockingbirds don't eat from your garden. They just sing beautiful songs." Or something like that.

ok well a mockingbird is supposed to be such an innocent bird, and if you were to kill a mockingbird that would be seen as such a horrible thing! so in the movie, when the blacks being accused of something they didnt do that is like killing a mockinbird-because they are both innocent.

The mockingbird symbolizes boo radley. He didn't harm anybody, he just wanted to help and if they had publicized what he did he would have gotten unwanted attention. It would have been like shooting a mockingbird who doesn't eat crops or do any harm, all they do is sing.
