I am in a Literature 115 (intro to lit) and i am going to be doing a presentation on Cultural Theory. I need to find a short story (4 pages long) That can clearly represent this topic. It just has to be something that displays culture, and how culture can effect people. i.e. people not fitting in, gay/lesbian, people sleeping around a lot, maybe just stories of people outside of the "American Norm." Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks! Also, if you could leave a link it would be awesome. Thanks again.

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway immediately comes to mind as a story about isolation, but I don't know about the culture aspect.

A Mother by James Joyce or Kafka's A Hunger Artist may do, but they're not American.

Here are links- http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~rac101/concord/texts/dubliners/files/dubliners13.html (Eveline IS shorter, but perhaps a less exact fit to what you require)

Following up on the James Joyce tip: "Eveline" from DUBLINERS. It's the shortest story in the collection, and it deals w/ both spiritual and physical "paralysis"; as well as the concept of being disaffected by one's surroundings.
