Question:
What is a good book reading program/list for great books (classics, recent, everything)?

I have a similar great films list that consists of Oscar Best Picture winners, AFI Top 100, and other similar films. But books are so much harder to make a somewhat concise list of.

First, I read slow so I can't have this millions-long list; it needs to be doable.

Second, I don't want to concentrate on any one type of book - I want to include fiction, non-fiction, authors such as Plato, books of poetry, "classics" such as Tolstoy or Dickens, Eastern books, Western books and even recent great books. Nothing is off the table as long as it is a "great" book.

So essentially I want a shortlist of the best ever. But there's so many books - and so many books considered great - I'm having a very hard time coming up with any doable list.

Does anyone have any ideas or links for such a reading program?

This is a pretty decent list that covers a wide range.

Ehm..

As parents, you're the most important first step in your children's journey into the wonderful world of reading. It is up to you to create the most supportive environment that turns your child on to reading - such as reading aloud to them often during the day and before bedtime, and placing age appropriate books for children around the house, so that the child will have access to plenty of books. Reading often to your child will help develop their interest in books and stories, and soon they will want to read stories on their own.

For wisdom The Art of Worldly Wisdom ( ~ Baltasar Gracian 4.9 out of 5 stars (35 customer reviews) For a better life The Interior Castle by St Teresa of Avila For the wonder of things Happiness and Contemplation ~ Josef Pieper Josef Pieper uses traditional wisdom in order to throw light on present-day reality and present-day psychological problems. What, in fact, does one pursue in pursuing happiness? What, in the consensus of the wisdom of the early Greeks, of Plato and Aristotle, of the New Testament, of Augustine and Aquinas, is that condition of perfect bliss toward which all life and effort tend by nature?
