Can you name instances where Ellie's father put his needs last and put his family or Ellie's needs in front of him?

The only part that stands out in my mind was when their old servant Maria begged them to stay in her cabin to hide from the Gestapo. The father told Wiesel that he and his older sisters were welcome go but the father would stay behind with his wife and Tziporah. Wiesel and the sisters refused.

I'm pretty sure there was an instance in the book where his Dad gave Ellie his bread so that Ellie would survive. I believe his dad did it because he thought he would be killed by the nazi's soon and figured his son could use his food more than he did.

I first read this book over 20 years ago. If I were to re-read it I would be able to help. But it's really a very short, interesting book. Have you read it? If not, you are missing a very good one!
