Question:
Should you write a novella first?

So I'm trying to start a career as a writer, but I was wondering if I should write a novella (about 100-150 pages) first just to see how people respond to my writing, or a full out novel?

Basically, I'm 14, and schools about to start again. So I need to know if I should start working my butt off to write more (a novel) or continue at the pace I'm going and write a shorter book (a novella).

Please and Thank-you! :)

take your time with it. since you're the author, write according to what you believe it right. if you feel your story is good as a novella then leave it at that but authors have a tendency to lose themselves. just write to what will make your story work then in the end you can delete all the parts you feel is useless or leave it as is.

please can anyone answer mine?

Well, what have you written so far, in the sense of beginning-middle-end finished stories? Anything at all?

You should first learn to write completed stories. That probably means starting out with 500 word vignettes. If you can't imagine writing a completed story 500 words long, how do you think you'll manage a much more complicated one which is several tens of thousands of words? 100 pages is _far_ too long for a first completed story.

I think often young writers think they'll start with "a novel" because it seems easy. You can dive in and write away for pages and pages without needing to have any idea where your story is going or do any editing or rewriting. You'll never finish it, of course - novels can't be written like that any more than short stories can. But you can produce lots of writing without having to face that you're just writing "and then" plotless soap opera. And that's fine if you are writing just for fun.

You want a career, though? You should be writing completed short stories and practicing editing and rewriting them. Most people write a million words before they get to a publishable standard.

write as much as you can as often as you can, write short stories at the same time as you write a long novel because you may need to take a break from the novel and short stories can be very refreshing.
