Haha, I was at the store yesterday and I watched the most stupid incident play out before me in no other place than the book section. I was thumbing through a few new releases as well as looking over some books that were on the clearance rack when I picked up a hardcover book and flipped to the first page of the first chapter. And lo and behold..there was either a dried piece of food stuck there or a very generous offering from someone's nose.

I sort of squeaked in disgust (shuddered a bit b/c my thumb nearly touched the food/booger..it was half the size of my pinky finger nail), and then half tossed-half dropped the book on a stack of magazines. There were two other people browsing through the books and they all gave me the (what the heck is HER problem), look. But BOTH OF THEM, then walked over, picked the book up and repeated the process!!!! lmao (We all started laughing and scrunching our nose-talking excitedly about a booger for almost 5 minutes..it has to be the dumbest thing that ever happened in a store).

So anyway, I was wondering:

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

Urgh! That's disgusting! That's why I hate going to my library, all the books are like that.

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Yes! It was something brown... I really hope it was chcocolate, lol.

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

SLIP IT BACK IN. SLIP IT BACK IN. *Slowly slips away.*

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

Ohhh... Is that why they're like that? Wow, I'm stupid, lol. Yeah, I do, and if the scissors are too far away then I rip it and hope for the best.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

I LOVE THE SMELL OF BOOKS. I only do it when I'm alone, though. I like smelling books when I feel alone.

God, I need to shut up.

In history today we were talking about what we like to smell (have no idea how it got to that because we were meant to be talking about Hitler, lol) and two of the girls on my table expressed their love of smelling nail polish remover, petrol and... something else that I can't remember. Me and this other guy were looking that them like "What the hell...?"

Lol.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

Publisher. Surely the author would've noticed. Or checked, or something.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

No! My old english teacher used to do that and I felt like saying "Why don't you just spit on my page, then?"

But, I have smudged words.

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

No, but that would be cool.

Actually... does the brown thing count? Lol.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

If they were numbered. And I could be bothered .

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

Before, but I just scan through.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

If it's not one of my books then I don't really mind. If it was one of my books... don't even go there, lol.

I LOVE YOUR QUESTIONS!

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Luckily I haven't! I am so grateful for that. Sounds disgusting.

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

Well it sort of depends. If I nearly rip the entire page out and it's harder to read than yes probably. But if it's just a tiny tare on the edge and the print wasn't effected then no, I'd just put it back.

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

Yeah I never got why they were made like that. But no I've never cut the pages. I think that would take too long.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

Not unless I notice it has a smell to it.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

Publishers.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

Nope. I don't lick my fingers when turning pages.

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

Yes. I've found receipts, scraps of paper, and bookmarks.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

Probably not, that sounds confusing.

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

Usually after unless it's in the front.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

Yes. I hate it when the spines are broken, and pages folded over or torn.

Eww!! That's so gross! It's funny they have to do the same thing though. XD

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Yes. And sometimes I'm not sure what it is. One time I think I saw blood. >.>

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

XD I just put it back in. I mean... it's not like I meant to rip it.

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

Nope, and nope. I get the one that looks the nicest and cleanest.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

O_o Not really.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

Author's spelling and editor laziness.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

Yes. I hate that. Sad thing is, they were books from the library when I did...

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

Yep. I found reciepts.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

No.

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

Middle. About half way through the book, I'll check out the author information and read about them. And see if they have published anything before. It's funny when I find an author I didn't realize wrote a book I read already and liked.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

Yes. Very much so. >.<

LOL gross!!!! eewwww!! xD

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Yes - spaghetti sauce, coffee, crusty unknowns (bleh!!)

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

I haven't done it yet.. oops, I take that back I did accidentally tear a page a bit. I showed weak moral fiber and slyly put it back on the shelf, since it was a book that I wouldn't buy anyway. ._.;;

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

No. I actually had a book like that, and it irked me. So I wound up buying a used version on ebay to replace it.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

LOL, no.. not before reading it. But sometimes, every once in a while, when I get a really old book from the library, I will smell it. >.>

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

mmm.... I usually go with editors/publishers - since they're the final "gate" before the book is thrust upon the public.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

Nope, I'm not a finger licker to turn pages, thumb through papers

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

Yes - bookmarks, paperclip bookmarks, receipts used as bookmarks, notes pertaining to the book, etc.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order? no, see question re: messed up pages :D

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

both - I'll glance at it before reading, read the book, then go back and look, making a note of them if the book was really awesome

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

yes and no. I feel protective of books in that they should be read more, re-used (given to charities or pass it along when you're done. NEVER throw a book away!), but as long as complete pages aren't missing, I don't mind little tears, creased covers, or little notes. That just means that someone really, and completely USED that book. (Except if the jerk scribbled mustaches on illustrations, potty language in the margins, or stupid randomness in the margins) XD

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store? I found a horrible bogey on the back of one once.

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice? I'm naughty. I put it back...I'm not made of money and I'm clumsy.

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long? I've never seen that.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know) Nope. I do carry them around and claim I'm 'bonding' with them.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

I assume it's the author. I know sometimes printer troubles mean typos though.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

Nope.

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it? I've an old dictionary (1935). When I flicked through I found flowers pressed between the pages, along with a old looking note saying 'Smile', which I thought was lovely.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

No.

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

Not really. I'm loyal to books, not necessarily their authors.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.? I'm the opposite. I really hate books being kept in pristine condition. I like a book that looks like it's been well read, not like it's just been bought.

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Yes. Strangely enough, I've found a booger clinging to the pages of a book before too. :S It was in a World History textbook. I opened the cover to the first page and sticking to the corner was a dried booger. Later, I made a vow to avoid touching that page for the rest of the year.

Another time, there was a dried spinach pressed inside a library book. Unfortunately, the spinach fell out and landed on my lap. Now, I always read library books while holding them a considerable distance away from me. Doesn't matter whether I'm the first person to check out this book or not, I never got over my fear of the spinach...*shudders*

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

I buy that book out of guilt. -_-* It irks me greatly when my books get ripped, even if it's only a tiny tear. Whether the person who was _destinied_ to buy the ripped book cares or not, I will still feel guilty.

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

Heh heh, nope. I look for other copies of the books that have _perfectly_ cut pages.

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

Yes. I do that to every single book before reading. Too bad there's no perfume called, "Eau de Livre." If there was, I'd spray it all over my desk.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

Publisher, as they tend to be the last "filter" the book is relreased to the public.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

No. :P I've never gotten into the habit of licking my thumb. It's mainly because my kindergarten teacher would lick her thumb before passing out coloring sheets and I'd grimace, trying to avoid coming into contact with the part her licked thumb touched. x)

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

Yes - it happened two years ago, when Twilight was all the rage. I borrowed a copy of it from my friend, who borrowed it from another girl, who borrowed it from someone else. On the page that describes Edward's sparkles, there was a suspicious and odd-smelling brown stain. I have a feeling that I know what it is, but now might not be the appropriate time to mention it...

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

No. I'd look for another copy with the pages in the right order.

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

Before. That way, I can find those other books on the local library's site and place a hold on them. The library takes a long time to process those holds, it's best to get an early start.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

Yes to severely creased covers and ripped pages. Writing inside? I will get annoyed at that the majority of the time, but there are exceptions. (And I'd be a hypocrite to denounce everybody who writes inside a book :S) When I find typos in a book, I will correct it with a pencil.
?

I can't believe you experienced that in a book store *_* People who come to the book stores in my town usually treat them like a holy ground or something :D :D

1) Have you ever found any "bits" clinging to the pages of a book in a library or a new/used book store?

Yes. Nothing THAT big, but yes. Small food leftovers, spilled coffee, cigarette burns... The things people do while reading...

2) If you accidentally rip a page in a book you're browsing in a store, do you feel compelled to buy it (you break it you buy it), or do you slyly slip it back on the shelf in hopes no one will notice?

That has never happened, thanks God! Because I'm usually broke and only come to the book store to.... be in the presence of the books XD Sounds weird, but it's true.

If it happened, I wouldn't be able to just put it back like nothing happened. I'd feel guilty and find some way to compensate it/buy it.

3) Do you buy books that have pages that folded during processing and weren't cut the same size as the rest of the pages in the book? If so, do you go home and cut the pages that were left too long?

Hahaha! That has never happened either. I did borrow a couple of books like that from the library but I've never cut those pages because I was afraid librarians would notice :-/

4) Do you sniff a book before you begin reading it? (It's almost like food for me, I'll smell it before reading it. Neurotic..I know)

You call that neurotic? :D

No. I like to caress the front and the back side of the book before I open it <.< And before I start reading it, I like to scan through the pages a couple of times, catch glimpses of the story. I don' know, I like to get the book-y feeling. Especially if it's a book I'm very excited to read.

5) Do you attribute misspellings to typos made on the publishers end or the author's spelling error?

Publisher's. I think the story has to be thoroughly checked and the spelling errors corrected before sent for the publishing.

6) Have you ever licked your thumb to turn the page and smudged the printed words?

Yes. And then tried to correct it by rubbing it more XD It didn't work, though.

7) Have you ever borrowed a book and found something left by the last borrower inside? What was it?

Yes. I found some random notes (sometimes concerning the story, sometimes completely random), bookmarks, several brochures, notes someone took while reading the book. I even found a DVD inside once! I still haven't seen the movie that's on it. Hm. I think it involves Britney Spears. Or not. Hm.

8) Would you buy a book with pages in the wrong order?

Oh, like from Calvino's story "If on a winter's night a traveler"! <-- That turned out to be quite a story, but no, I wouldn't. It would annoy me too much.

9) Do you read through the list of other books by the author before or after you finish the book?

After I read the book, yes.

10) Have you ever felt illogically protective of books and get angry when you see severely creased covers, ripped pages, writing inside, etc.?

Yes, especially if it makes it hard or impossible to read. I usually don't mind if the writings inside the book tell you something useful or funny. What I do mind, though, are underlined (or circled! - I once read a book in which practically every word was circled! I mean, what the hell! I couldn't even see the letters!) rows, crossed words and insulting messages/drawings. But I usually find the latter only in books that people have to read in high school.

Hello, my friend! Miss you! This looks like fun, so... =)

1) Oh yeah. I buy used books a lot, and I've often found, um... let's call them left-overs.

2) That depends. Have I ripped the page out? Or is it just a little torn? Because if it's just a little, I'd probably put it back. If not, I might have to buy it. But I'm really, really careful with books in stores because I'm terrified of paper-cuts.

3) I would probably find another copy. If there wasn't, yeah, I'd buy it and cut it when I got home.

4) Haha, yes! Especially used books! I love old book smell.

5) Spelling errors: Publisher's fault. Word choice errors: Author and Editor's fault.

6) No. I'm afraid to turn a page with a wet finger because I might get grossness from the paper stuck to my finger. Talk about neurotic.

7) No, I don't borrow books very often. I tend to buy them and then forget to read them all.

8) No way. That would drive me insane.

9) Both, or neither. It all depends on how much I like the book or if I think I've read something by that author before.

10) Only the really good books. Although, screwed up covers are usually a sign that the book has been read many times and it's probably very good. But when people tear pages or mess with the inside, it really bugs me.
?

Funny. I like how the other people had to experience it for themselves - I can just see that :)

1. Luckily no!

2. slip it back...unless it's something I want.

3. That hasn't happened in ages. But I'm pretty sure last time I got a book like that I did in fact cut it down to size.

4. Not always. I like to do that when the book is obviously old - like at thrift stores. That's one reason I wouldn't want a Kindle or Nook.

5. I think it's a combination of both. The author made the mistake, but it got past the publisher's eyes. Makes me crazy though when it happens.

6. No, I always turn from the top. But I can tell if my fingers are dirty b/c sometimes it does smudge. That happens a lot when I've been handling newspapers & get the ink on my fingers then try to read.

7. I got a book from the library with a recipe on an index card. On the back was scrawled 'savoir faire' and 'sexuality.org.' Yeah.

8. Hm...I probably wouldn't notice until I was reading it, but that would make me crazy.

9. Not unless I really like the author and that usually happens afterward. I liked Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers series and just recently learned she wrote many books before that. I hope to check some of them out sometime.

10. Yes! I don't think it's illogical though. A few years ago I let someone borrow my Harry Potter books and she made a solemn vow to take good care of them. When she brought them back, she had dog eared pages. They were hardbacks too and when I reread them recently, my teeth were set on edge every time I saw that. UG - never again!

Good questions!

1. Yes -,- It was suspiciously green. Ugh.

2. Nope. ;) Very slyly slide it back in.

3. I have never seen those books before! I probably wouldn't buy it, because it would cause my OCD to go off the walls.

4. I love booksmell. :)

5. The publisher's end.

6. Nope, I hate it when people lick their finger to turn the page >.<

7. Yep! I've found receipts, telephone numbers, and other boring things.

8. No! Agh.

9. Before, I just skim it, then I look back after I read the book.

10. Yes. Books are like babies x)

That is rank. Pure rankness.

1 Yes! I have found mustard (if it wasn't mustard, I bet it was bleedin' ear wax!) and boogers too in library books.

2 I'd buy it, but if it was a David Gremmel book i'd chuckle all evilly then leaving the store burst into a villain esq laugh.

3 I haven't found a book mis-shaped like that before, but if I had done then i'd surgically correct it.

4 Only if its fresh, newly made, not a library book as much... in case you inhale a booger or anything like that. Also i'd sniff the edge of the book first, then the spine, then the first page... then read.

5 Publishers end, i'd imagine. Well, I would image most authors would thoroughly go over there work, then hand it to a close writer/reader friend to scan through it, then there is the editor, so i'd imagine it was the publishing house.

6 No I haven't, never licked my thumb to turn the pages. I try as delicately as possible to turn over the pages with a pinch of me fingers, as to preserve it so it looks 'fresh.'

7 No I haven't. Luckily.

8 No.

9 After I finish the book, in case the author touched on issues i'd like to read again, or maybe they wrote a good story and i'd like to investigate and read more of their work.

10 Well I wrote inside my text books for university, I think that could be a different matter, but as for a book to read through 'pleasure' i'd expect its condition to be left as i'd leave it. Libraries for instance, i'd expect the books there to be well, severely creased, covers ripped, pages rubbed with boogers and mustard and cretin things. As for protective... mm, irritated, but not protective.
2011-05-19 18:41:07 UTC
1] No, thankfully!!

2] I've never done so but I'd probably just put it back in the shelf provided I didn't literally rip it in half.

3] Yes but it's annoying and yes I have cut them.

4] Only if it's a new book. Secondhand books are all icky sometimes.

5] The editor.

6] No.

7] The most I've ever found is receipts!

8] Definitely not.

9] Rarely.

10] Yes! Horrific!
