Well - if it's over 40,000 words than it's usually considered to be a novel. Any shorter and it would be a novella, which is a shorter version of a novel between 15,000 - 40,000 words. And shorter than 15,000 would be a short story.

Publishers will not only ask for the number of pages - but you bet they'll want to know the word count.

Now I'm not a math genius - so I couldn't really say how 40,000 translates into number of pages.

If you're writing a novel, it is probably more important to consider the word count. Depending on the type of fiction they usually want ~ 100K-130K (maybe romance can be a little shorter, I'm not sure). I haven't written anything since this past summer (with being in school and all), so the numbers may have changed.

Pages just depends on what font size/spacing all that. Most books I've read are about an avg maybe ~350; but there is so much variety--I've read some that are as little as 130pgs and some that are as long as 800pgs. So it really just depends on your publisher and what they will accept. I would think a "safe" range would be 110K-120K.

Writers and publishers measure story length by word count, not page count, as there are many factors that influence how many words will fit on a page. You could find a novel that's formatted the way you want yours to be and count how many words it has on a typical page... A rule of thumb is that, with the default settings, one page in Microsoft Word is about two pages in a printed book.

Different genres have different lengths. And pages in the industry of publishing are equated with word count. Short stories are under 10000 words about 80 pages. 10000 to 20000 are novellas at about 100 to 150 pages. Harlequin romances are usually on the shorter end of the spectrum as well as YA chick lit anywhere between 150 pages to 200 which is cut off at about 60000 words. Regular romance and basic novels of any genre go between 60000 to 80000 words. That puts a book nearer to 300 pages. Fantasy and paranormal and physiological mysteries tend to run on the very high end at 120000 words over 350 pages.

Single title romance novels typically run between 85-95K words. That's not quite 400 formatted manuscript pages.

Category romances, such as the ones published by Harlequin, vary by line, but often run between 65-85K words.

You need to check with different publishers for their specific guidelines, though.

Edit: We count in words, not pages. Format your manuscript thus:

Double space

First line indent .3

Courier New or TNR 12

1" margins

That will give you roughly 250 words per page. Assuming that, 85K words = 340 ms pages.

Read some as short as 120 pages, and some as long as 800 odd. There are no rules other than very short works are usually called novellas.

Well, there is always a first page and then there is always a last page. Then, there are all those pages in between.

Sorry, but there is no way to really answer this question correctly. Sort of like asking "how long is a rope" Well, there is the beginning of the rope, the end of the rope . . . . .

Yep, totally dependent on how much spills onto the page XD

Good luck
