I've noticed that at the beginning of paragraphs in books the line starts in a bit from the page, why?

I'm writing a book and I'm need to know whether this is something I have to do in Word (or whatever program I'm typing it in) or when I get it printed will they do it for me.
like at the beginning of each paragraph should I put a few spaces in so it doesn't align with the rest of the lines

you must indent... if you are seriously writing a manuscript... you use the 'tab' button to indent...

whenever starting a new paragraph in a manuscript you must indent...

the references i listed are prototype manuscript layouts and writing style if you are serious for writing you book...

good luck and stick to it... its a nice accomplishment if you finish.

You can set your "ruler" in Word to be wherever you want "Tab" marks to be. Then all you have to do is "Tab" button over to the marked points.

Typically you'd indent a new paragraph about 5 spaces then go back out to the left margin for the remaining sentences in the paragraph.

If you include a long quotation then that's typically indented even further in and right justified (translation: indented from both the left and the right & centered on the page). No quote marks if it's a long quote and indented in that way.

If you're writing you should definitely get a copy of The Elements of Style by Strunk & White. There's even a friendly illustrated version of it out now...

it's called tabbing or indenting and is done so that when a person is reading a book they know when a new paragraph starts. you could either just press the "tab" button on your key board, or set your program to do so evey time you hit enter.

Press the Tab button, each time you start a new paragraph. I don't know if you need to do this, but I prefer to do it, I think it indicates that there is a new paragraph starting.

What do you mean?

The indent?

When starting a new paragraph, just hit "tab" on your keyboard.
