I had a hard time with that chapter, too, even after reading it several times. Watching the movie really cleared it up for me, so my suggestion for you is to do the same. Then it should make a LOT more sense. Happy reading (and viewing) to you!

Added - If you don't want to watch the movies, how about just the Siege of Gondor scene?

Another possibility is to look for plot summaries online for the books. Sparknotes is worth a try and so is Wikipedia.

Oh my gosh, I am soooo sorry!!! I really wish I could answer your question properly, but my copy's currently gone MIA! grr... I'll probably find it under my mom's sink or something tomorrow, she's fond of confiscating any of my books to punish me, whether I'm currently Reading them or not. Um, I thought 'The Siege of Gondor' was in the Return of the King??? I haven't read it in so long... I feel really lame because this is supposed to be my strong suit. Um, to keep the characters and places straight, it sometimes helps first-timers to watch the movies.... because all the cultures look so different on screen instead of you having to visualize it. But if you don't want spoilers, I wouldn't recommend it, duh. Which chapter came before?? that might help some... Are you saying you didn't get it at ALL??? surely something must have rubbed off? I'm SOOOO sorry I can't be more helpful. my mind is a total BLANK! If you told me what happened, I'd be able to help more!

Better yet, have you watched the movies at all? I only ask because I'm a huge LOTR fan, and wayyyy back in high school, I had a hard time reading them. It took me a couple of attempts, but finally made it through. Now I read the trilogy ever other year! But, instead of explaining, maybe watching the movies first may give you a little better grasp (I agree- until you get used to it - the names are confusing). Good luck~

This might help you a bit. There is a fairly good synopsis about halfway down that explains the locations better.

Also, your copy of the book probably has a map near the front, which can straighten things out considerable. Best wishes, and enjoy the books. :-)
