Like the person above me said, within the Shannara Universe chronologically speaking, the first book in the series is "Running with the Demon", because Brooks recently wrote a prequel series (The Genesis of Shannara) that links his Word and Void series with the Shannara stories. However, the first book Brooks wrote was "The Sword of Shannara", which is probably where you would want to start. However, "The Sword of Shannara" is a lot like "The Lord of the Rings" so you may want to save that one for later so you don't get turned off the series because that one book is so much like LOTR. His other books are a lot different. I would recommend starting with "The Elfstones of Shannara" which is my personal favorite. Below is Terry Brooks' recommended reading order from his website and then is the chronological order of the books (the order events take place in the Shannara Universe) .

Chronologically speaking the Word/Void Trilogy (Running with the Demon, A Knight of the Word, and Angel Fire East) is the first in the series. The first in the series that Brooks wrote was The Sword of Shannara Trilogy (The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, and The Wishsong of Shannara).

There is a Wikipedia page that lists all the books in order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannara#Chronological_list_of_novels ).

Cheers.

I prefer to read books in the order they come out rather than chronological order. Reading the first published books first takes you through a series the way an author experienced it, and it's also sometimes easier to understand a prequel if you read the other books first. There are also sometimes fun references to the other books in prequels that you won't catch if you read the prequels first.
