I enjoyed most of Patricia Cornwell's books, but her last two- three were bad, the last one being especially bad. Patricia Cornwell herself has become very strange.

For her last book, she actually blamed a government conspiracy for her poor reviews on amazon.com and barnesandnoblecom. Apparently, she can't believe that people didn't like her book. What an ego!!!

Patricia Cornwell books are some of the best books you will read the stories are all individual but the people it them Carrie over so start with the very early books Postmortem. Body of evidence. that's got me thinking i may start rereading them again. enjoy

I agree, I used to love the kay scarpetta books but for some reason after patricia cornwell became obsessed with jack the ripper her writing went down hill. I couldn't name a favourite as it's so long since I read them but you can't go wrong with the first 4 or 5. P.S. Is it just me or do you think of Dennis Franz when you picture Marino?!

I lost interest a long time ago. I like the early ones but found Scarpetta self obsessed and she shows remarkable poor judgement in men. Then there is the time scale; in th first books Scarpetta was in her early 40's and Lucy was 9 or 10; now Lucy is about 30 but her aunt has only aged about 5 years. I wish I could manage that. By the way Tammipup is getting a little confused. Patricia Cornwall is an American writing under her married name while John le Carre is an English. His real surname is Cornwall and he's the brother of the actor Charlotte Cornwall.

I prefer the Scarpetta ones, although my daughter has refused to read any since the author killed off one of the main characters and then brought him back to life. The others were OK, but I like the post-mortem descriptions. You can see the order of books at www.fantasticfiction, and yes, I would read them in order.

If you like Patricia Cornwall's work, you will also like Kathy Reichs and Karin Slaughter.

When reading any of her Scarpetta novels, I would definately advise starting with the first one and reading them in order. The main characters are the same throughout her work, and skipping around can ruin parts of older books for you if you go back and read them.

I read a couple of others that were not about Kay Scarpetta, and was very disappointed!

RE:

Which are the best Patricia Cornwell books?

I have just discovered her. Am currently half way through The Body Farm. I had a quick look on the net and it seems she has written loads of books. I'd love to read more of her work but don't know where to start. I have heard there is some kind of order to her work (The Scarpetta series)...

Patricia Cornwell have written lots of crime novels.

But these are some of the novels from the Kay Scarpetta series; Point Of Origin, Black Notice, Cause Of Death, Cruel And Unusual, All That Remains, From Potters Field, Unnatural Exposure, The Body Farm, Predator, Trace.

I have read all these books and each one had me gripped.

Happy reading.

I've only read Cruel & Unusual which, I think, is the 3rd. from The Scarpetta Series. First comes Postmortem, then Body of Evidence. i didn't know there was an order when I bought it, but they can be read perfectly anyway as they are separate stories.

All of her Scarpetta books are amazing. You should check out her site for the complete list, there's a lot.

I've only read one, and maybe I hit on a bad one, but it was so awful that I've never read another one. It was so cliched and the murderer was someone she introduced in the last chapter.
