Is this a good idea for a story?

I haven't started to write it yet, but my ideas are forming about the whole concept. There are still a few holes here and there though.

The story is set far in the future. The continents have merged back together in a sort of reverse Pangea state. Population is ridiculously overflowing. There is a law now that every year, all of those who turn 20 years old (past the teen years) are divided into two groups. In one group, each person is assigned to kill a specific person in the other group. (not too sure on how they get divided yet). They have a year to track down and kill their people. If they fail to do so, they are assassinated themselves by the government.
In the story, the main character (who is a person in the "unlucky" group) spends her year running and in hiding, residing in places and acting like she belongs. The year is almost over when she meets this one man and falls madly in love with him. He falls for her too until he realizes that she is the one that he is assigned to kill.

I know. This is really scattered right now. And, I'm sorry if the wording seems a bit confusing to understand the concept. These are just my rough ideas. :)

It's okay to be inspired, and since this is just for fun and maybe to put onto an online forum it would be fine. But that's as far as you could take it, I think. It's very similar and becoming an over done concept, because after HG everyone started copying it and trying to write the same thing. Just like Twilight. So you have a bunch of 14 year olds all inspired by the same thing, and those books weren't exactly good literature, they just sold because they knew 14 year old girls would like them. If you're hoping to be a serious writer I would suggest you try to be inspired by better novels.

It's not simpler, nor is it a bad idea. But the thing is - you shouldn't write this story if you're trying to make it like Divergent and Hunger Games.

You can keep those as inspirations to draw from (like how most of us writers do at first), but by the end of the day you have to make the story original, your own and interesting enough that no-one can say you're copying a formula that's already established

Were you inspired by the Hunger Games?

It's not too similar. Hungers games are about games that you have to survive in but your story isn't about that

it is epic. You should it to a publisher when it is done. But Seriously that would make a blockbuster
