Question:
Which is better: US vs UK covers! +BQ?
2011-04-12 12:14:06 UTC
Okay, so I have done this ages and ages ago, but let's do it again with more books.

Simple say which one you prefer. It doesn't matter if you have or haven't read them. We are simply going to judge by the covers. :O Some might be similar, of course =)

:O Dude, I so thought of the similar question you asked "ages and ages ago" earlier today, for whatever reason. I'M PHYSIC! D:

1) UK, because white covers seem to be rare among YA on this side of the pond.

2) UK

3) US

4) US

5) US

BQ: No idea

BQ2: Freely. I like nice covers, so therefor the insides simply MUST be pretty too, no? Such LIES.

BQ3: Excessively so.

Ooh, interesting.

1. US. The white of the UK cover is a little too white and doesn't really work well with the foreground. The contrast is distracting rather than complementing.

2. US. The UK cover isn't bad, but I really enjoy the colours of the USA cover.

3. US again, I'm afraid. The UK cover makes it look like a young adult romance. I do not usually like those. The US cover is great.

4. UK. There's too much red going on with the US version, but the UK version has just the right amount of contrast. Now, if only I could remove the 'Twilight fans will love it' comment...

5. I don't really like either, but the US cover is slightly better, I think. The image on the UK cover is cropped so awkwardly.

BQ: My current story is a screenplay, so I'd need a movie poster rather than a book cover. I would really want it to be a head shot of my main character, a girl in her twenties, with her hair in some sort of messy up-do. And then her hair would be the city. And she would have duct tape over her mouth.

BQ2: Why yes, yes I do. Still.

BQ3: Not really. I chew gum every once in a while.

1. U.S. The two covers are really similar, but the image pops more against a dark background.

2. U.K. I like simplicity. I'm not really sure what this image is of, but I like it.

3. U.S. I don't know who that **** is on the British version, but I don't like the way that he's looking at me.

4. U.S. The girl looks etheral and fiery. The girl on the British cover looks like she's constipated.

5. U.K. Much more dynamic and mysterious.

BQ: What would you [want] your cover to look like for your current story?

Something simple but captivating. Or an epic illustration.

BQ2: Do you admit you judge on the covers more than you should? Even still?

Yep! I'm really superficial. I'll buy certain editions of books just because I like the cover design better.

BQ3: Random question: Are you a gum chewer? Mean, do you chew gum a lot?

Not really. I used to be, but I like mints better now.

BQ: Anything that's a attention grabber but I don't want any *real* people on it. Except if it's a shadow or something.

BQ2: Yes, at first I look at the cover. If it's interesting enough I read the back, if not then I return it.

BQ3: I like chewing gum, but I don't do it often. I mostly chew in school.
The universe wants me this way.

BQ: Woods at night, with the face of a girl with dark hair and makeup, maybe a wooden falling apart house in the back.

BQ2: Yes definitely I try not to but its the cover that makes me pick up the book, but I try to read summaries and reviews before I read a book it saves time as once I start a book I have to finish it no matter how bad it is, nothing worse than time wasted on a bad book.

BQ3: Don't chew much gum.

BQ- I really have no idea. I'd want it to look different, not following the black and red theme a lot of YA books have

BQ2- Yeah a little, it's the cover that first attracts me to the book, then I read the blurb and decide from that

BQ3- Not loads but I like to chew when I'm studying for exams as it stops me from getting up to get food just to procrastinate

BQ: I honestly haven't give a whole lot of thought to what the cover of my story should look like. I would like the cover to show the setting (it takes place in future distopian city), or soemthing similar like that.

BQ2: Yep. There have been a few books that I honestly didn't think I would like, but ended up reading anyway, and I turned out to love them! Similarly, sometimes a book "looks" good, but it turns out to be crap. I remember seeing an older cover version of one of my favorite books, and thinking to myself, I would never have read that based on the old cover.

BQ3: I like chewing gum. I use to do it more often, but I'm not allowed at work, and many of my teachers at college don't like you chewing gum in class, so I don't get to often...

1-5: US. I really do prefer the US covers more, they are more artsy..makes me want to read the books.

BQ1: I would want my cover to depict a small black chest-like box with letters flying out of the box and being blown away by the wind.

BQ2: Yeah, I still judge books by their covers...not good though, I could be missing out on a FANTASTIC story.

BQ3: No, can't remember when last I had gum. Did you know that stuff takes 7 years to digest? Or so I've heard, still not sure whether it's a myth or not....anyway, thanks for the question!

I got #5 from amazon today! :D I just started reading it earlier :) Ah crap- I mean number 5. My bad. xD I have read number 4 though, and I have to agree with you D:

BQ: I don't know yet. I don't even know the title.

BQ2: Yes xD I always tell myself not to- but I can't help myself. If the front cover is rubbish, I wont give it a second glance.

BQ3: No; I hate gum. Ughhh; it makes me feel sick when I look at it so I tend to veer away from it. I've had it lots of times, though.

1) UK of the two

2) UK

3) US, by far- I quite like that.

4) Neither, I do like the text on the UK one though

5) Us, just- I don't really like either

BQ: Something simplistic but eyecatching, that wouldn't date too quickly- so nothing with photos of people on it

BQ2: I wouldn't say I judged books on covers too badly- I am more likely to pick up a book with an interesting cover/title though.

BQ3: I chew gum if I'm offered some, I don't spend money on it

BQ2: They do play a part in catching my eye but equally does author and title. :)

BQ3: Not really, only if I have some on me and have just eaten something unsociable. But when I'm chewing gum I'm acutely aware of it and it agitates me.
