This is some intense potterness coming up:

We all know that the reason Harry survived Voldemort was because Lily sacrificed herself. I mean it wasn't like James who was just blasted aside, Voldemort gave Lily the option to stand aside so she didn't have to die but she chose to and that's what caused the protection around Harry.

The reason Voldemort gave Lily the choice to stand aside but not James was because Snape had begged Voldemort to spare her since he loved her. Of course James was horrible to Snape in their childhood so Snape didn't care about James enough to ask Voldemort to spare him.

IF Snape did, then JAMES would have been offered to stand aside (and I presume he would have refused like Lily) and then when he was killed, both Lily and Harry would have been protected and they both would have lived.

So does it all boil down to how James treated Snape in all those years at Hogwarts? Or do you think even then Snape wouldn't have asked Voldemort to spare James?

Okay this is some pretty intense potterness so I'm sorry if it's a bit confusing!!

No. Because Harry only lived because Lily did a powerful protection spell.. It's not that she just died and then suddenly, BAM!, Harry's protected. James might not even know how to use that protection spell since the spell was very old already..

possibly but I think that feelings of love are stronger than feelings of friendship. also Snape may have then come to resent James anyway because he married Lily instead of him so Snape might have thought that Voldemort killing James was an effective way to get rid of him so he could get to Lily.

i admire James. He grew to become right into a brave, dependable guy who fighted for the Order and knew what grew to become into ideal and what grew to become into incorrect. Yeah he bullied Snape yet Snape wasn't harmless eighter. He grew to become into constantly stalking the marauders and he casted sectumsempra spell on james that is extremely risky. James on no account used that kind of spells that should in simple terms harm you. shop in techniques that James risked his existence and stored Snape from a werewolf. James grew to become right into a sturdy pal and he did not care approximately who grew to become right into a pureblood and who wasn't. And certainly, he enjoyed and guarded his spouse and his son extra effective than everyone and died to furnish them time to run from voldemort.

If James was nicer to Snape, Snape may not have become a death eater. He most likely only joined the death eaters because the coolest kids in the school bullied him, making him unpopular and then the victim of more bullying from other students. He also only became with future death eaters because they were probably the only people who showed him respect of any kind.

If James wasn't a bully to him, he may also have ended up with Lily, since the only reason why their friendship fell apart was because of his involvement with the death eaters. If he had ended up with Lily, Harry may not have been born to parents who thriced defied the dark lord, since Snape may or may not have been involved with the order and the death eaters as a spy and if he was totally uninvolved with either side, Snape and Lily may have been like any other couple during the war. .

Also, if James had been nicer to Snape during their school years, it is possible that Snape wouldn't have asked Voldemort to spare James because if everything stayed the same despite James' treatment towards Snape, James still got the girl, while Snape was left in the dark side. James may still have been a bully to some of the students that Snape was friends with, and even though James may treat him good, Sirius and the other marauders (minus Remus) may have still treated Snape like an outsider and since they were James' friends, he may have thought that James agreed with them.

Yes, that is exactly right. If Snape also cared for James, Voldemort would've hesitated to kill James and Lily and Harry would've both survived.

Severus and James friends? Thats like Draco and Harry being friends. Severus only cared about Lily. I doubt he had room in his heart for anyone else.

I don't think it would have mattered either way. Snape wouldn't have cared about James, even if James hadn't been so terrible at Hogwarts, because James married Lily. While Snape may have wanted Lily to be happy, I don't think that feeling would extend to the man who married her. In the end, James wouldn't be given a choice to sacrifice himself, no matter what his actions were towards Snape.
