Cedric was perceived by Hogwarts to be the "True" Hogwarts Champion. He was old enough to enter (as compared to Harry) and he didn't enter the tournament to further his glory and fame, as some folks thought that Harry did.

The Hufflepuffs bonded behind Cedric because he was from that house. The Slytherins supported him because he wasn't Harry, and the Ravenclaws supported him because he entered the tournament fairly (as Harry was thought to). Only the Gryffindors supported Harry because he was in that house.

because Hogwarts wanted someone who would win, and Cedric Diggory seemed like that kind of guy...good looking, smart, etc. Harry Potter may have been famous, but he was only a fourth year, compared to the other contestants who were seventh years. Also, Viktor Krum was from Durmstrang, so obviously the kids from Hogwarts were not going to root for him.

He was practically perfect - kind, handsome, intelligent, funny, charming and everything else you can think of. Plus Robert Pattinson adds extra charm...

He was handsome, intelligent, kind, loyal. Nearly perfect to the girls. His father was popular as well.

because he was good looking, honest, smart, and kind, he was loved because he won for being worthy of the contest. P.S. did you know that Robert Pattison from Twilight plays him in the movie?
