Don't you just hate losing your place especially for class? Imagine how helpful it would be if each line on a page had its own color so finding your place was quick and easy. Think of all the time and the work hours and studying hours that this would save in the long run. Productivity would skyrocket. So why aren't books ever published that way? I'd go through line by line and do it myself to my books(for class mostly) but I don't have that kind of time.

"And how would that cost a lot of money? We have technology now we could easily just print out books that way on a mass scale. It might cost a little extra(buying both colored and black ink cartrages) but this would be offset a little by savings on black ink(since only one line on any page would be black). The savings in the long run would be enormous."

Sorry, but I work in an industry where we often commission printed materials and printing in colour is WAY more expensive than printing in black and white. It's not just a matter of buying ink cartridges at all. The colours all have to be mixed to exactly the right shades and black ink is far cheaper than coloured ones, so what you save on black ink is FAR exceeded by what you spend on coloured ones.

Also, it's not just about what 'looks professional'. It's about what is easiest for the eye and the brain to process. Again, because I work in a job where we have to commission printed materials, I've had to go on training courses to learn what is/isn't easiest for people to read, and any text with lots of different coloured lines is very hard for most people to process mentally if they are reading continous text. It wouldn't save anyone time at all and it would cause productivity to plummet, not rocket.

Believe me, if it was easier for people to read in the manner you suggest, materials would already be printed like that.

Imagine all the colours that'll need to be used to make that work. It'll take forever and basically it's cost more money and time to print out the book. Plus, it doesn't look as professional as it being all black because it looks like a rainbow has vomited on that page. Colourblind people will be put to a disadvantage because some of the line they'll not be able to see

That would be like riding on a roller coaster - a dizzying effect and one that would distract me from the text.

Did you know that there is a bookmark - it's something like a paper clip only shaped like an arrow head - that slips on the side of the page and points to the last line you read so you don't have to spend all that time skimming down the page to find out where you left off.

Think of just how much that'd cost, both to manufacture and then the price you'd have to pay at the store.

I don't have a problem with losing my place in books for class. I use a bookmark and post-it notes.

I think that would be beyond distracting. Have you ever seen one of those stories where someone thinks they'll be so clever and use different fonts for speech, thought, semaphore, telepathy, radio...it's simply unreadable.
