Question:
How could people think Twilight is better than Harry Potter?
2008-11-27 20:36:27 UTC
Please explain, I really don't understand why someone would think this. Also, please state reasons, not just 'OMG, Edward is hot and Harry's not' (I have actually seen people use that as a reason), I need actual informed facts, and PLEASE: if you want to be taken seriously, DON"T talk like a fangirl.

The media can switch very easily. Twilight is hot right now, and I am sure HP will be once the movie is out.

To be honest, People are sick of waiting for the 6th movie right now. I am part of the real Harry Potter generation, where we were able to read the first book (experience the Potter Mania) and enjoy HP all the way through the seven books while still being at an age where we could do it without people thinking we were immature (bad reason, us Potter fans would see every movie and enjoy every piece of lit that J.K. Rowling Puts out no matter the age). It's the fact tat the Harry Potter books came out in a timely fashion, (the last book came out in summer of 07, I graduated in 08) The movies aren't coming out in that range though. I had a discussion with some of my friends, we said that it will be embarrassing to go to a child's movie. Especially since the last movie is looking like it will come out when we are about 22 or more.

Plus, Anne Rice books were the hot thing before Harry potter, it's a generation thing. The Anne Rice lovers didn't get Harry Potter Mania when it came out. HP maniacs doing get the new Generation of Twilight.

Twilight has sex appeal, it's a little more grown up with still that fantasy element to it. Harry Potter is generally a child's/tween book, even though the characters grow up and do have boyfriends and girlfriends, we don't see that real chemistry... it's skipped over really, which needs to happen when it is a child's/tween book.

I can that Harry Potter is a completely new world. Unless you read them very intently that you will get lost, some people just don't get it until the Harry Potter movie comes out just because 75% of people learn visually.

Twilight is for 13-up. I do admit it's kind of ridiculous, though. What I don't like is these eleven year olds saying that Edward is sexy and other stuff like that, because they don't know what 'sexy' and other stuff like that is.

Especially when people are Mulling Robert Pattinson because they are convinced he is the REAL Edward.

People also like Edward Cullen because he is the idealistic real guy. He is gentlemanly, nice yet rebellious, and protective. Girls like it when a guy will punch out another when he looks at his girl wrong. Edward Cullen is any girls fantasy, and he seems more real than Harry Potter who is in this Magical world, when Edward Cullen Lives in Washington State, Forks. (Which in itself I can't fathom because I have been to forks many times and La Push beach, and it's nothing special. Yet people from all over the world come to Washington, Forks mind you. Just yesterday I met people from Australia who were here for the Forks tour.)

If I come off as a Fan girl, I don't mean too. I have had no sleep, and I am hopped up on caffeine, which is making my limbs shake. :)

I just like the books (HP and Twilight), just because they are effortless reads. It's fun to just escape for a while, especially from college life and jump back in to the child like mind frame for a while.

If you haven't read the twilight books, you should. Because then you can have a more broadened perceptive of your own question rather than this very narrow-minded one.

If you did read the books, they are not everyone's cup of tea. I do find Bella rather needy, and Edward a little unrealistically protective. I mean if he had his way, he would but Bella in a bubble (Don't you remember Bubble boy? Like that).

I think the main reason has to do with the teen age girls that are reading the books. I have read Harry Potter and have seen Twilight the move (I have to wait until after christmas to read twilight which sucks anyways). Now that Harry Potter has come to an end (book wise) the girls need something else to sink their teeth in. so here come Edward.

I myself like Harry because is the hero, and a true friend. i like that part of him. But Edward (from what I have seen in the movie) seems mysterious, and more grown up (after all Edwards what almost 100 years old) which may be why so many teenagers are after him. *looks both ways* don't tell any of them but i don't think Edwards real. lol.

So did you like the Harry Potter books better than Twilight? yes i guess. hmm wish i could get my hands on those books.

Yes, I've read the Twilight books and the Harry Potter series, so I know both sides of the story. I love Harry Potter much more than Twilight though. I'll first start out with the writing. J.K. Rowling's writing in Harry Potter greatly surpasses the writings of Stephenie Meyer. Yes, Meyer's writing is easy to read and people can relate to it, but the writing to me seems immature. It's awkward as if she added "big" words to improve the writing, but it just sounded odd. J.K. Rowling's writing just fit right to me. I didn't feel like she was trying to make her work sound better, but it was just good to begin with.

Next, is the storyline. Twilight is a love story, but with vampires. Okay... It's just a story for the time being, but won't last for a lifetime. I can take the Harry Potter books and give them to my kids when I grow up. I could also reread them 30 years down the line, but I've read the Twilight books once and that's enough for me. I doubt Twilight would ever be considered to be a classic one day while Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is actually under consideration. (I read that somewhere, but can't remember where.)

The transition from book to book was also done much better by Rowling. Going from Twilight to New Moon and after just wasn't interesting. Meyer develops so much on one thing, but when it comes around she doesn't live up to the hype she creates. Rowling's battles in Harry Potter was amazing. She described everything and you can really see the whole scene in your head. I thought Meyer left too much to the imagination that shouldn't have been. Some authors does that well, but I don't think she did. Rowling was able to bring us through 7 books and she's done it very well. Meyer has gone through 4 and I was tired by the second book.

I see the crazy fangirls in my school that loves Twilight. I'm not going to tell them how awful the books are because they aren't, but I'm not going to say how wonderful they are, especially compared to something as great as Harry Potter. There are so many books out there that it simply annoys me to hear how beautifully written Twilight is. I've heard someone say that the writing in Twilight beats that in Angela's Ashes. I couldn't believe that. What even got me more was that the person who said this haven't even read Angela's Ashes. This sounds mean, but I personally think that before you say how great a book is, you need to have read more than Twilight. A lot more.

I think it has to do with the fact that Twilight appeals mostly to young teens [-*These are the people who insist it is better than HP*-]. If you say that Twilight is best loved by the 12-15 set, then the Sorcerer's Stone was published when the 15 year old was 4 and when the 12 year old was 1. When Deathly Hallows came out in 2007, the 12 year old was 11.

Although, by all means the 11 year old could read Harry Potter and enjoy it, the excitement over each release was over their heads, and they weren't interested in the books. Although I am 16 and have been an avid reader of the books since I was 8, I know many who just watched the movies and haven't read the books. They weren't able to enjoy the magic of the decade of HP mania.

Now, Twilight has only recently been completed and the movie series has just started. If you read Deathly Hallows now, nobody will spend hours discussing it in person or on the internet with you. However, those teens who weren't able to enjoy HP mania much then can do the same with Twilight now. And when everyone is excited with you and your favorite book is the "It thing", it is easier to get caught up and obsessed.

At least, that's my theory.

Most of the people who said that Twilight was better than Harry Potter either a) were girls or b) never read Harry Potter.

Twilight is a love story, therefore more appealing for girls and women. The plot is also less complicated so easy to read.

Harry Potter : you have to read the 7 books to get everything. The themes are also deeper. You got more research that was done for it through differents mythologies, different languages (made-up words, spells, etc.)

Don't get me wrong, I like Twilight a lot (the girl in me, you know) but it is SO not Harry Potter.

Harry potter is better.

1. Deathly Hallows made more money than all 4 Twilight books put together

2. Harry Potter has a deeper plot.

3. Each character is different, no characters even seem to have similar thoughts while in twilight most people just seem like similar

4. teen think twilight is better because of the romance. That's it. because of the romance. they don't want some boy wizard.

5. HP has just attracted a bigger crowd overall, more people like it

People who prefer Twilight to Harry Potter probably do for one of these reasons:

A. They love Edward and they love the idea that he is perfect and hidden in the human world and maybe they even believe he's real.

B. They are small minded and the Harry Potter series (being the creation of a whole new world) was just too much for their brains to take in.

C. They haven't even read Harry Potter and just criticize it because all the other Twilight fans do.

So far i see you've gotten answers that you asked not to get...i agree with you though. Harry is much more in depth and so much more gripping. The only reason fan girls like twilight more is becasue they can relate to the main character and want a relationship like Bella. Harry Potter doesn't revolve around a love stroy and Twilight does which appeals to most teen girls.

I still can't see why Twilight lovers think its actually better then Potter but Potter will always be truely better and J.K. rowling will always be a better writer

of direction harry potter!!! Twilight is in difficulty-free words about relationships.while in harry potter there is mystry romance thrilll comedy n tragedy. Harry potter also has those little issues tat makes the reader amused like the wealey pranks, lunas craziness, fleur being like say phlegm, lavender calling ron wonwon or hagrids ununderstandable liking of monsters while in twilight theres no blend of genres itz oly darkish romance. the plot is darkish and boring . In twilight u can discover bella staring into edwards eyes for 10 pages!!!

Although I have never read the Harry Potter books (but seen the movies), I still think twilight is better because it is more for girls and it is a better story.

I don't know! Harry Potter is awesome! I mean, Harry Potter has meaning and puzzles and clues, and it's just so much fun to read! I wish Rowling would right an epilogue book! That would be SO cool!

whoever said that is on crack. i loved both the series and their both great in their own way. the twilight series is a love story and harry potter is an more umm action book? i don't know what it is but its great and not so romantic(my brothers said it had TOO much but they're losers).basically twilight is not better than harry potter.i can see why somebody would say that seeing as i've been obsessed with vamps since kindergarten though =D

I'm sorry, I couldn't tell you. Harry Potter is far better than Twilight and will always be. Twilight is AWFUL compared to Harry Potter.

Edward is a dream boy to many girls. He is perfect, and the plot works along with him. I guess you could say that the plot is simple, and easy to understand, and there are no weird vocabulary words. Harry Potter is really a whole new world for all ages. Twilight is a whole new idea of something that could happen with a careless girl. The plot just leaves you hanging, and you don't even need to analyze everything. You can just read it. It is also for more mature kids.

Because it just is.

Harry potter is way overdone. It deals with magic and more adventure stuff.

People can actually relate with twilight bettter even if it has vampires and werewolves because one of the main characters is a normal teenage girl.

It deals with real emotions, and is in fact set in a real place (I live in forks).

Meyer is a much better writer too, she goes so much more into depth.

You asked for opinions and there's mine.

So deal.

Because teenage girls want sappy romance and a happy ending, not a book with an actual plot.

because harry potter is like magis stuff, and it's king of complicated in so many ways..... while twilight is actually pretty good, and i like campires better than wizards. Especially the books are really good, with description, and the feelings of the characters are so vivid and realistic, while Potter is just so craazy and kind of twisted... don't get me wrong, i've read some, and are ok, but it's too much to follow, and sometimes it gets really boring, while twilight has a lot of action and is more attracting to a reader...such as myself, not necessarily everyone

Like you, I don't get it.....and I guess there is no other reasons than Ed being "hawt" and "so charming"......I didn't read the book & my 15 yo cousin (who likes HP) hated it so I figure that it must be really bad.

Two words: Hot vampire.

That's it. Not the plot (not that there is one)

Not her writing style.

It's all because of the "dream guy" Edward.
