Hello. Check out the Preditors & Editors website. They keep a fairly current list of agents, both good ones and bad ones. Obviously, you want to avoid the ones they say are not recommended.
The sad truth is, it is VERY hard to find a good literary agent these days unless you are already published. Chicken and egg, right? Do your homework--you'll find someone to rep you. Just don't go paying any "reading" fees. Those are a ripoff.
Good luck!

Some literary journals publish manuscripts from unpublished authors without literary agents. There are also a few smaller publishing houses that will accept manuscripts. The best place to go would be your local library or if you have a university or college in your area with an English department, you can always call them and ask if they have a writer-in-residence or a professor you could talk to about getting published. They're usually pretty good about helping you out, though they're sometimes so busy it takes a little while for them to respond.

Most libraries, (not the branches) receive the latest information on editors. This will consist of who is where now, if they are taking any unsolicited material and how much they pay. As far as agents go, at least once a year in the larger markets there will be an agent gathering where they will take 30 interviews with new writers. They will answer any and all questions you might have, just have your questions ready. Again the library will be your source of information. They will have the dates of the event.
