Bellatrix Lestrange is a descendent of the Black family and Sirious's cousin. She married a pure-blood (Rudolphos Lestrange) and she and her husband both became death eaters. She may have only been evil and sadistic before Voldemort's fall, but 12 years in the wizard prison Azkaban definitely made her crazy.
A mudblood is a wizard who was born from non-magical parents. Your friend was mistaken about Bellatrix being a mudblood (or muggle-born, if you're being politically correct). Bellatrix is pure-blood, and probably one of the staunchest pure-blood-supremacists in the book series.

Sirius Black is Bellatrix cousin. Sirius being sorted into Gryffindor was an oddity for the Slytherin family. Bellatrix is result of Slytherin inbreeding which produced the Gaunt family also. While she's just meant to be evil, Bellatrix is a villianess that you love to hate.

Bellatrix is Serius' cousin. She's so odd because she's evil and served Voldemort ect. A mudblood is someone who is not from all wizard genes, so they're mixing muggles into magic.
