HELP! I'm having problems at school....Should I leave my college so I can transfer to UCLA?

I am currently a freshmen student at UC Santa Cruz, However, I want to move back to Los Angeles to be with my family and my love relationship. My proposed major is cognitive science, and I'm also considering psychology. The main reason why I want to leave is because I'm behind with classes to major in cognitive science, and also some of the classes I need are not offered next quarter =( I will have to wait for specific classes I need until they become available next year (due to state budget cuts).

Therefore, I am really upset that the classes I need are not offered so I might not graduate on time. I realized that no matter where I go, it is always going to be hard....that's why I would rather move back with my family. I also feel like I don't fit in...the people here have very different personalities. I don't think this is the school I want to be at for the next 4 years. '

So my question is.....should I leave UC Santa Cruz and go to a community college? Then transfer from a community college to a better school like UCLA, Pepperdine...or one in New York?? Another option I have is to leave UC Santa Cruz and go to Cal State Long Beach (I have been acepted for summer 2011). However, I also would want to transfer from long beach to go to a better school like UCLA.

So considering how I want to be closer with my family, want to fit in, want to live in a bigger city, and want to graduate on time....what would you suggest I do?? Leave after the winter quarter is over, or leave after completing 1 year at UC Santa Cruz (after spring quarter)...and then go to SMC so I can go to UCLA?

It sounds like you've made up your mind already and are looking for support. As a graduate of UCLA, I'm biased, but I think your plan to transfer to UCLA sounds great--IF you can get in and IF you're planning on transferring for the right reasons.

As a psychologist, I have to ask you if you're running away from the problems it seems you've created for yourself at UC Santa Cruz. If so, reconsider. You chose UC Santa Cruz for a reason; has that reason changed? Was UC Santa Cruz a poor choice?

There's no such thing as graduating on time. You can take as long as it takes to get the classes you need to graduate.

You'd have a better chance of transferring to UCLA from UC Santa Cruz than you would from a community college.

I think probably the best thing would be for you to try to get caught up at UC Santa Cruz. If you decide then to transfer to UCLA, go for it. Just don't leave a mess behind you--it's never a good practice and it might harm your chances of getting into UCLA.

Wrong approach.

Figure out what your post-college career is going to be.

Then pick the major and classes you need to get that career.
