The Wood Elves are very protective of their domain. When the Dwarves, who are lost in the forest, stumble into the realm of the Elves, the Elves see it as trespassing, and so arrest them. Although the Dwarves didn't know they were doing anything wrong, Elves are very secretive and suspicious towards the other races of Middle Earth, especially Dwarves, since they are well known for hating each other.

Avari (the unwilling)...wood elves kept from men and all races and distrusted all but there own kind.the wood elves did not mine or work metals nor did they trade much.there in the east of mirkwood lived the wood elves...in anciant days past, elves and dwarves lived side by side but then fought over treasure's (The storys are long and many). But the dwarves were pretty much screwd over many times"and" by the elves, they created lots of wealth for the elves and were never paid there due!..So the elves&elf king didnt trust the dwarves for fear they were after there treasure's...And Thorin would not tell the elf king why they were in there neck of the woods so he threw Thorin in prison...hope this helps ("such a great book"!!) first read it when i was 7yrs old make shure you see the new movie in a year or so?...(May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks!!)="Gandolf the wondering wizard"...thanks,Kit!
