Question:
Book recommendations for very well read 16 year old girl?

I would love some book recommendations; mainly classics and modern classics and contemporary fiction.
If you are going to recommend me YA, I'd be happy with recommendations of books along the lines of John Green, Stephen Chbosky, Jacqueline Woodson (WOOD-son, NOT WIL-son) and Nina LaCour. However, I detest books such as The Hunger Games, Twilight and the Mortal Instruments, although if that's what you're into, then great! I'd love recommendations of books that you have read as part of your high school course also!

Thanks a lot guys!

We have the same taste. I love classics as well and I love John Green and Stephen Chbosky. :)

Anyway, I will first recommend books that are on my summer reading list, and then some books I've read before.

My summer reading list:

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgees

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Ender's Game series, Orson Scott Card (I've read the first two books, they're great!)

I Am the Messenger and The Book Thief, both by Markus Zusak.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Animal Farm by George Orwell

This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Books that I also recommend:

1984 by George Orwell

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

I hope I helped. :)

I defiantly recommend any and all Jane Austen books, as well as Arther Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter (I'd say that's edging towards what you don't want, however, they are fantastically written.) and Edgar Allen Poe.

Lord of the Rings

The Hobbit

To Kill A Mockingbird

The Great Gatsby

I read the following for my American Lit in high school, didn't enjoy them much, but if that's what you're into, great!

The Scarlet Letter

Billy Budd

The Grapes of Wrath

1984 <-- skip pages 124-126 is you have a problem with slightly explicit scenes

Red Badge of Courage

The Adventures of Huck Finn

I hope this helps!

How about things like Frankenstein, Dracula, Beowulf?

Or perhaps you're into the writings of the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights)

Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit (I have not personally read them, but they're on my list)

The Iliad and The Odyssey? (I didn't enjoy those, but that's just my personal opinion)

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird are good classics

Modern:

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The Kite Runner and/or A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Angels and Demons/ The Davinici Code by Dan Brown

If I think of more, I'll add them.

Have a good day!

I was told that The Catcher In The Rye is one of those classic books you should read in your teens to "get the full affect" I enjoyed it, but it's kind of a guy book. I still found it interesting.
