I'm writing a story and I need a name for one of the main characters. She's a tough, no- nonsense girl with a sharp tounge and I need a name to match her personality; so noohing to girly! Any suggestions?

Whatever you do, I wouldn't go with an actual boys name or something that seems like it should just be for boys (ala Sam), as that will seem pretty cliched/stereotypical. I'd just go with a girl's name that isn't too soft, like Gwen, Neve, Catrin, Tess, or Rhiannon.

Look at some of the toughest character heroines we have around these days: Selene and Sonja from the Underworld series, Alice from Resident Evil, Lara from the Tomb Raider games and movies, Sarah from The Descent films, etc. Point is, just remember that you don't have to name her something like Michael to make her seem tough. Femininity doesn't equal weakness. I've got a bada** character called Natalia.

Don't use a boy's name, it's way to overdone. Be original.

But here's something to think about, some of the meanest people have the nicest names.

When your parents name you, they don't know if your going to be clever, pretty, mean, nice.

I find when people give nice people nice names, it's less believable.

If the character had a tough family, then she might have a tough name but if she has a respectable family then she'd have a respectable name.

When I name my characters I think about their family first. In one of my stories the main was named after her Auntie who had died when her and her sister, (the mains mum) were little.

Riann like Ryan only a girly way to spell it. It's tough because it's usually a guys name.

Milla or Michelle

I was think Michelle Rodriguez, she seems tough to me.

Whatever you go with stay away from Sam, WAY too over done.

I like Marti (Or Marty, Martie)

Something staccato-sounding and blunt would suit her quite well. Experiment with different sounds (yes, just sounds, like oomph or bang) and see which one you like best and diverge from that.
