Question:
What are the editors of novels supposed to do?

Are they supposed to simply fix typos and grammar and usuage; or is it also their job to help with the story line? Will they tell you "Hey, I think this should be taken out." or "This needs to be changed so it fits the story line a little better."

Is it their job; or does the author have to ask "Hey, what do you think about this...?"?

Clean up the book to best sell it in the marketplace by taking out grammar, typos, redundant use of words or phrases, paragraphs that don't work in the book, and so on.

It's a big job in a way and every writer is grateful for a good editor.

they tell you whats wrong with it, like storyline problems you said. they also tell you what the book needs to become better. and yes its their job every author has to have an editor, my friend told me the publishers give every author their own editor, but im not sure if its true.

An editor is the one who proof read the book and cuts out unnecisary seens. Tells you who would read your book and what would fix your book.
