I think that J.K. Rowling was trying to make the cat's have something to do with magic. Tonks is right. It has to do with their origin and what they are.

so like Draco Malfoy if he was to have a cat it would more likely have more to do with evil and

Hermione. SHe has a cat and we see it lays around and acts smart. like when they were attacked by the whomping willow the cat knew what to do. and some people are animugas. (i forgot how you spell it.) like McGonagall (forgot again.) she changes to a cat. and i think that's all.

i loved your question though it's awesome. i never noticed this at all.

Well, some cats in Harry Potter are Kneazles. Kneazles are sort of like cats, only much more smarter then an average cat. Arabella Figg's cats are really Kneazles, and Crookshanks is part-Kneazle. I'm not really surebif this is what you are talking about, but I hope it helped!

Cat's aren't exactly a huge factor in Harry Potter.

Rowling tries to stay away from the cliches`, e.g Not every witch has a cat, and they certainly don't ride on the broomsticks with them. There are Kneazles, which have been mentioned but there not used too much in the books, apart from Hermione's cat Crookshanks being part Kneazle.

She said quite a few things like that in interviews over the years. Everyone wondered - how did the power of love save Harry? JKR said it would. Simply put, it didn't, it played no role. I believe the 'cat' thing is similar to this. At the time of the interview, she thought that cats would play a more significant role in the books, but - as time progressed, and story lines changed - this didn't come to be, and cats didn't end up being anything important.

Also, if I were her, I'd say that if I didn't have a good answer for the question.

they discuss this theory in depth on the leaky lounge here is the link if you want to go through them all...

i have no idea... JKR says she hates cats... but there seems to be a lot of them in her books... nothing cat related happened in the last two books... weird... good luck!

i do agree with the Witches familiars (Ron had Scabbers then Pig [or whatever], Harry had Hedwig, and Hermione had Crokshanks) idea... you should also look into hermione's spiel about Egyptian worship of cats...

I think it is because of the black cat superstition and she took it from that.

I think pretty much all the cats mentioned in Harry Potter are Kneazles. Crookshanks is part kneazle, and all of arabella figg's cats are kneazle and so is filch's cat, mrs norris, which is why she's so creepy and hangs around all the time.

they look like cats and are very intelligent, independent and occasionally aggressive, and have an uncanny ability to detect suspicious and distrustful people. (for example when crookshanks kept attacking scabbers, aka pettigrew.)

i remember jkr saying that but i dont think its actually that important, just a fun fact. you could read fantastic beasts and where to find them for more info.

(just remembered, in deathly hallows, the letter harry found from lily to sirius mentioned baby harry almost killing the cat with his toy broomstick, maybe it was a kneazle? i also seem to remember someone telling me that that cat might be crookshanks which is why he likes harry or something..? :S)

hope this helps!
