the secret keeper is the only person that can see the house and can enter and exit it freely-just like how dumbledore was the secret keeper for 12 gimmauld place (if u've read order of the phoenix) and if the secret keeper tells someone the location of the house, then that person also becomes part of the 'secret' and can also enter the house as he so pleases. so black wanted to be secret keeper because he knew that he could never sell out his best friend (james potter) by telling someone the location of their 'secret kept' house even if it meant torture or death at the hands of the dark lord (voldie) and he knew that peter was untrustworthy and could easily sell the potters out. so that's why he wanted to become secret keeper instead of peter, because he would rather have died than betray the potters. hope that helps.

Sirius was to have been the secret keeper for James and Lily however he decided to change places with Peter Pettigrew. The reason behind this was simple, Sirius knew that Lord Voldemort would suspect him of being the secret keeper. Although he would rather die than betray James and Liily he was not sure that he could have held out under torture. To try and trick Voldemort they made Peter the secret keeper as, based upon his nature, it was believed that Voldemort would not think of him. What Sirius, James, and Lily did not know was that Peter was secretly a supporter of Voldemort and would betray them. Of course when Voldemort did not come after him Sirius knew something was wrong but was too late. He then went after Peter however Peter was prepared and arranged things to look like Sirius was the traitor.

They were trying to trick voldemort. Since Sirius BLack was James' bestfriend, he is the obvious first choice for secret keeper. And so they used that as a false lead, and made peter pettigrew secret keeper. What they did not know is that peter would betray them to voldemort. and thus the whole plan failed. Sirius was even the one who suggested the idea to switch secret keepers to harry's parents. this is why he was so gulity that he felt as if he as good as killed james and lily with his suggestion.

p 369 (US hardback) the 2nd to last paragraph, sirius explains why. he says he told james and lily to change in order to throw off voldemort, he would come after sirius and the potters would be safe. there are a few more details that u can see in the paragraph there for yourself.

then on the top of page 373 it explains that they switched secret keepers from black to pettigrew and didnt tell anyone (such as their best friend lupin) because sirius feared that lupin was the spy....because they knew that someone in the order was passing info on to voldemort (we find that out in a later book, not sure where)

so they assumed lupin or someone else would tell voldemort that sirius was secret keeper and then the potters and their whereabouts would be safe

Sirius convinced Lily and James to change to Peter because, Voldemort was more likely to go after Sirius rather than Peter because Sirius was the Potter's best friend and Peter wasn't.

Everyone knew that Sirius and James were best friends, so Voldemort would naturally go after Sirius...Sirius thought that by changing it to Peter, he would be keeping the Potter's safe.

well Sirius made pettigrew the secret keeper thinking that voldemort would think he(Sirius) was the secret keeper after being james's best friend and all that and go for him

personally i think the secret keeper should have been dumbledore

because he belived voldermort would have gone for the more talented wizard Sirus rather thatn the weak one Peter if Peter was not a traitor it would have been the perfect plan.

He wanted to talk with Lily and james I think

He just wanted to be James and Lily's Secret Keeper. Nothing too complicated really, really no motive behind it.

they were trying to fool voldemort, but sadly it didn't work out too well.

he doesn't want the resposibility, and doesn't want voldemort to find him and force him to give them away
