I am well versed in the classics from Plato and Homer to Jane Austen and am looking for a modern author who has a sharp wit and who can form an elegant turn of phrase. I am not interested in non-fiction at the moment and do not want anything that is too comical as the subject matter of the novel in question.
Thanks.

read the marked series by pc cast! it is sooo good! :)

heres about the book series and the 1st book!

House of Night is a series of vampire-based fantasy novels by American author P. C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast. It follows the adventures of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen-year-old girl who has just become a fledgling Vampyre and is required to attend the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma

Marked:

Zoey Redbird, a normal 16-year-old girl has been Marked as a fledgling, a Vampyre-in-training. However, it is instantly clear that she is not the average fledgling. She has markings that are the same as full-grown Vampyres. Zoey is admitted to the House of Night, a Vampyre finishing school and quickly finds a group of friends- Damien, an extremely nice and intelligent gay guy, Stevie Rae, the country girl who is her roommate and becomes her best friend, and Erin and Shaunee, best friends who are freakishly alike even though they are of different backgrounds (nicknamed "The Twins").

Zoey also meets a High Priestess in Training, Aphrodite, who is pretty, mean, and the queen of the social scene. Aphrodite invites Zoey to join the Dark Daughters, an 'invitation-only' group run by Aphrodite. Zoey is forced to go to their meeting and begins to experience blood-lust, something that is more common among older fledglings and Vampyres. Zoey freaks out after this discovery and runs out of the Dark Daughters meeting, running into her human ex-boyfriend, Heath, whom she accidentally imprints on after drinking from him. Later, Zoey realizes that she can control the five elements (air, fire, water, earth, and spirit), at the goddess' ritual. This makes Zoey even more special as her goddess, Nyx, usually grants only one or two abilities to special individuals. Zoey also becomes acquainted with Aphrodite's ex-boyfriend, Erik Night, further igniting the strife between Zoey and Aphrodite; who believes Zoey just wants to steal everything she has. At the book's conclusion, Aphrodite's bad intentions cause a Dark Daughters ritual to go awry; she accidentally summons negative spirits who attack Heath. Zoey, Damien, the Twins, and Stevie Rae perform a circle and summon the five elements to drive the spirits away. Neferet comes and wipes an unconsious Heath's memory, and she then strips Aphrodite of her title of the Leader of the Dark Daughters and High Priestess in Training and gives it to Zoey

please consider that i would rate it pg-13 cuz its a little dirty. my mother read it and let me so it okay! :)

I just read "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory. It was excellent. (historical fiction)

I am reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. So far it's a page-turner. (the protagonist is female, set wayyy in the future, very creative...) This one is the first book of three. The third comes out in August.

I have also started reading "The Help" (author's name has escaped me at the moment). Takes place in the south during the 1960's...very well-written.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

The Zahir by Paulo Coelho

I realize that you're looking for modern but have you ever read Oscar Wilde? I would recommend him as a very graceful author. Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls as well because it is elegant if you can see it as such

Read Godless by Pete Hautman. It's a really great book about an important subject. Even though the subject matter is sophisticated the author tells the story in a simple but good style. I highly suggest it.

Mistborn by ability of Brandon Sanderson. it truly is a fable trilogy, and outstanding. The Gunslinger by ability of Stephen King. that's certainly purely the 1st e book of The dark Tower, that's seven books entire. Tha dark Tower is extremely like a horror/fable/western.

AVOID TWILIGHT. ok, edith wharton is amazing. really good read. start with age of innocence. it's not like jane austen but there is a certain similarities, lot of social satire and that sort of thing. also, Nietzsche if you want something philosophical. definitely read hitchhikers guide to the galaxy...amazing.

Alice Hoffman is a talented author.

I'm reading "The Probable Future" at the moment, and it is really interesting!

Any novel by her would be a worthy read.
