I am 16 and hope to someday become an inspiring author. I read a lot now and wish I could write like the many authors do. I feel I have the skill, but once I start writing i no longer like my idea and end my story.

The best way to become a good writer is to start writing. Write everyday.

Don't try to edit your story in your head. Just get it down on paper. You need to do this while your ideas are still fresh.

A lot of people think they need to have a whole story before they start to write. You don't. Just write whatever comes to mind.

These are not for publishing, but for practicing your skills.

Take some creative writing courses. Pick up a few good books on the art of writing. The Write Great Fiction series is one that I would recommend.

The above answers give good advise. I would like to add two things. One, I really like that you want to become an "inspiring author", not a "best selling" one. That shows you're in it for the art, not the money (I hope). Two, you're 16 and already working on it! Great:)

Maybe a nice exercise, try to rewrite the scenes you like from your favourite authors. Read them once, think them over, and try to write them. You can make this as difficult as you like: change the main character, change the setting, change the viewpoint... Important is that you try to stay true to the style and feeling of the original. This will show you the possibilities of language. It is like a musician playing a work by a long-dead composer.

The most useful exercise I ever did like this, was a fictional meeting between two characters I really loved, but from different books, authors and times. This taught me so much.

Good luck!

Please ignore the first person, very rude.

The first thing to becoming an author is reading. You read and read and read. You get ideas and write them down. You might not ever use them, but still, write them down.

Then you write. Start off with short stories. Little ones that don't go for more then a few pages. A few thousand words. Then you make it grow and blend them together.

I have written the starting of a book, thirty pages, and i dropped it. It didn't have enough descriptions or thoughts. So instead of dropping it entirely i i changed it and added more description and thoughts. If i get it published, i could have bits cut out of it and i might need to add more, but that's the whole process.

But not everyone gets published, but still. Never give up hope.

I started out writing poems for school. Bad, bad, bad poetry. Then I had to keep one of those journals for school and granted my grammar and spelling was atrocious, I had a flair for the dramatic. My vocabulary was astonishing because my parents and siblings were all smart but also much older and no one ever bothered to speak to me like a kid. If I didn't understand a word they used it was off to the huge dictionary in my livingroom.

After a while my teacher took notice and brought me a ton comics from his parents comic book store. I poured over them until I became an addict. My imagination grew and I continued to write and expanded by joining the yearbook staff, submitting to the school paper and entering writing contests. I didn't have a moment of greatness but all small tests of my ability and fortitude. I learned to write anything from captions to indepth technical articles. I opened a typing editing business while in college and did practically half the campus' work for a mighty steep price. I have a degree in English and one in Media and Theatre Arts Production. I did techincally writing, ghost writing, speech writing, essay writing, poetry, erotica, editor and contributor. I tried to always keep myself writing. With enough rejections from Movie studios and television networks I stopped for a long time but at 30 I decided I could write after I retired from my job as long as I could write well. It is a skill that never goes out of style and will keep you employed. Currently I'm ghost writing three projects and doing proposals for two companies. I have two books on shelves now and work a regular job while raising two kids.

Ultimately all writing it isn't all about writing the Great American Novel and becoming rich and famous, it has to be about being a good writer and the recognition in whatever field you choose will come to you.
