i have a question about memory modification. in the beggining of book 4, when the death eaters come to the quiddich world cup and levatate mr roberts and his family, the ministry modifies their memories so they cant remember it. but towards the end of book two gileroy lockhart accidently modifes his own memory but he cant remember ANYTHING like even who he is. so will the roberts' not remember anything? and wouldnt it look sus in the muggle world if they couldnt remember anything??

no what memory modification does is changes the memory, but what lockhart did was obliviate, which completely erases memory

No. Memory Modification almost never modifies someones memory so that they can't remember ANYTHING. With Lockhart, it was a rare case, because he was using Ron's broken wand. Lockhart wanted to modify their memory so that they wouldn't remember the past few hours, and Lockhart would get all the glory of discovering the Chamber of Secrets, but the wand made 2 mistakes: a) it modified Lockharts memory instead of Ron and Harry's, and b) it completely modified Lockharts memory so that he didn't remember anything at all. He was then sent to St. Mungo's, which is also proof the Memory Modification is never that severe: it wouldn't be a spell used by the Ministry and everything had everyone who was cursed from it had to go to St. Mungo's. That would be ridiculous.

I'm not sure if this is answered in the books, but I'm guessing there's levels of modification. For example, Patronuses vary in strength depending on who is casting them. I'm guessing that the ministry of magic knows to what extent the Muggles' memories need to be modified. Gilderoy Lockhart modified his memory COMLETELY because of the power of his spell. His goal has always been to modify memories to the point of not remembering anything because has taking people's stories as his own (to write best-selling books) and wanted to avoid accusations in the future.

Lockhart used Ron's broken wand to try modify two different peoples memories and so when it backfired it was even more powerful than he intended, he also hit his head so i dont know if that made it worse but the ministry used controlled memory modifcations...

depends on power of the spell :)

The reason is that Lockhart was using Ron's wand, which was, well, extremely messed up. That caused the spell to not only backfire but become much more powerful than intended.

Hope this helps!

with the memory modification when done properly you can control what is forgotten, remembered, and remembered in place of the wiped memories. in Gildroy Lockhart's case he was using a faulty wand and i believe he wanted to wipe Harry and Ron's memories completely, but the wand backfired wiping his memory instead.
