Question:
Is Professor McGonagall (from Harry Potter) an Animagus or does she just use Transfiguration?

I was just wondering because she usually turns into a Tabby Cat, and wizards and witches could probably Transfer themselves into animals, or become an Animagus, but I'm not sure which one McGonagall is. So, if you could help me, that'd be great! Thanks!

Hermione states that in the third book she looked up animagus and she said that she looked them up when she was doing her homework and then there were three unregistered Animagus around Hogwarts that was Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail. Though you can transfigure yourself into somethingelse in doesn't count as being an animagius. Hope I helped!

A witch or wizard that can fully transform themself into an animal is an animagus. That is the definition. Some, like Krum did for the second task, can use partial transformation on themselves, but that's not a true animagus.

She is a registered animagus.(However, you don't have to be registered to be an animagus. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs were illegal Animagi)

I think Hermione mentions that McGonagall is one in book 4 or 5

She's an Animagus. An Animagus turns into one animal, and self-transfiguration is supposedly difficult, if not impossible, so this indicates she's an Animagus. Apart from that, the books call her one.

She is a registered animagus. Her animagus form is a tabby cat.

Animagus, if she wasn't she couldn't have become a cat so easily and frequently and it's the only way to FULLY become an animal.

She is an animagus.

PS to Aurora: Moony was not an animagus. Lupin was a werewolf and the other three became animagus so they could help him.
